Book Description
Surfaces are often held to be of lesser consequence than 'deeper' or more 'substantive' aspects of artworks and objects. Yet it is also possible to conceive of the surface in more positive terms: as a site where complex forces meet. Surfaces can be theorized as membranes, protective shells, sensitive skins, even thicknesses in their own right. The surface is not so much a barrier to content as an opportunity for encounter: in new objects, the surface is the site of qualities of finish, texture, the site of tactile interaction, the last point of contact between object and maker, and the first point of contact between object and user. Surface Tensions includes sixteen essays that explore this theoretically uncharted terrain. The subjects range widely: domestic maintenance; avant-garde fashion; the faking of antiques; postmodern architecture and design; contemporary film costume. Of particular emphasis within the volume are textiles, which are among the most complex and culturally rich materialisations of surface. As a whole, the book provides insights into the whole lifecycle of objects, not just their condition when new.

Surface Tension in Microsystems
Author: Pierre Lambert
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642375529
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 338
Book Description
This book describes how surface tension effects can be used by engineers to provide mechanical functions in miniaturized products (1 mm). Even if precursors of this field such as Jurin or Laplace already date back to the 18th century, describing surface tension effects from a mechanical perspective is very recent.brThe originality of this book is to consider the effects of capillary bridges on solids, including forces and torques exerted both statically and dynamically by the liquid along the 6 degrees-of-freedom.brIt provides a comprehensive approach to various applications, such as capillary adhesion (axial force), centering force in packaging and micro-assembly (lateral force) and recent developments such as a capillary motor (torque).

Surface and Interfacial Tension
Author: Stanley Hartland
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 0824751361
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 633
Book Description
This edited volume offers complete coverage of the latest theoretical, experimental, and computer-based data as summarized by leading international researchers. It promotes full understanding of the physical phenomena and mechanisms at work in surface and interfacial tensions and gradients, their direct impact on interface shape and movement, and their significance to numerous applications. Assessing methods for the accurate measurement of surface tension, interfacial tension, and contact angles, Surface and Interfacial Tension presents modern simulations of complex interfacial motions, such as bubble motion in liquids, and authoritatively illuminates bubble nucleation and detachment.

Book Description
There's something in the water and Donald's got to look after it. On a quiet Scottish Island, local man Donald must navigate the dangerous social waters as mermaids are spotted. Unable to reject his inherent decency, Donald helps a stricken mermaid and engages the assistance of Irish incomer Kiera. When a fisherman is killed, they flee the growing rage as the locality rips itself apart in the name of revenge. With the local presbytery demanding a response, glamour models challenging the reserved image of the island and a rejected child hunting these new mammals, can Donald and Kiera keep a human fish under wraps and out of sight? Or will they succumb to the sharp end of a harpoon? Keep a good watch 'cos something's stirring the water.

Surface Tension and Related Thermodynamic Quantities of Aqueous Electrolyte Solutions
Author: Norihiro Matubayasi
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1439880875
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 226
Book Description
Surface tension provides a thermodynamic avenue for analyzing systems in equilibrium and formulating phenomenological explanations for the behavior of constituent molecules in the surface region. While there are extensive experimental observations and established ideas regarding desorption of ions from the surfaces of aqueous salt solutions, a more successful discussion of the theory has recently emerged, which allows the quantitative calculation of the distribution of ions in the surface region. Surface Tension and Related Thermodynamic Quantities of Aqueous Electrolyte Solutions provides a detailed and systematic analysis of the properties of ions at the air/water interface. Unifying older and newer theories and measurements, this book emphasizes the contributions of simple ions to surface tension behavior, and the practical consequences. It begins with a general discussion on Gibbs surface thermodynamics, offering a guide to his theoretical insight and formulation of the boundary between fluids. The text then discusses the thermodynamic formulae that are useful for practical experimental work in the analysis of fluid/fluid interfaces. Chapters cover surface tension of pure water at air/water and air/oil interfaces, surface tension of solutions and the thermodynamic quantities associated with the adsorption and desorption of solutes, and surface tension of simple salt solutions. They also address adsorption of ions at the air/water interface, surface tension of solutions and the effect of temperature, adsorption from mixed electrolyte solutions, and thermodynamic properties of zwitterionic amino acids in the surface region. Focusing on the thermodynamic properties of ions at air/fluid interfaces, this book gives scientists a quantitative, rigorous, and objectively experimental methodology they can employ in their research.
