The purpose of this study was to examine the association between one's military service profession and feelings of stigma and perceived barriers to mental health treatment seeking. Specifically, we compared military veterans and service members (SMs) who serve(d) in combat arms (CA) professions (n = 70) versus those who serve(d) in combat support (CS) or combat service support (CSS) professions (n = 214) on measures of stigma (The Endorsed and Anticipated Stigma Inventory) and perceived barriers to mental health care (Barriers to Health Seeking Scale). Additionally, we compared those who serve(d) in primarily Special Operation Forces (SOF) assignments (n = 26) with other veterans and SMs (n = 231) on these same measures. One-way between subjects Analyses of Covariance (ANCOVA) were conducted to analyze the data. Findings indicated no differences between CA and CS/CSS groups on the measures. SOF personnel reported lower stigma and fewer barriers to help seeking when compared to other service men/women. The findings, while preliminary, may help our understanding of how military subcultures can influence feelings of stigma and barriers to treatment. The finding that SOF SMs reported less stigma and treatment barriers than other SMs suggests that there may be something about their rigorous training, specialization, focused treatment, experiences, and/or character that allows for them to overcome stigma and barriers to a greater degree than other military professionals. Given the need for SMs to be able to benefit from mental health treatment, more research into the role of military subcultures on stigma and treatment seeking is warranted.
