Book Description
"An experimental study of supersonic combustion bas been performed using the McGill University pebble bed heated wind tunnel. Supersonic combustion was achieved in a stainless steel combustion tube and in a free jet issuing from the tube. Due to fuel mixing delay time, the combustion efficiency was very low. The total heat addition was limited to a small value by friction in the combustion tube. Computer programmes were written for the I.B.M. 650 digital computer to calculate test conditions and to compute Mach Number and total pressure profiles in the tube, with and without combustion. Because of the low combustion efficiency, the calculated profiles do not agree with the experimental values for cases with combustion." --

Book Description
This book describes the unsteady phenomena needed to understand supersonic combustion. Following an initial chapter that introduces readers to the basic concepts in and classical studies on unsteady supersonic combustion, the book highlights recent studies on unsteady phenomena, which offer insights on e.g. interactions between acoustic waves and flames, flow dominating instability, ignition instability, flame flashback, and near-blowout-limit combustion. In turn, the book discusses in detail the fundamental mechanisms of these phenomena, and puts forward practical suggestions for future scramjet design.

Book Description
"Performance, heating and weight considerations indicate that hypersonic air breathing power plants require fuel injection and combustion in a supersonic air stream. Considering first the combustion problem: Dissociation effects limit the maximum static temperature attainable by chemical fuels, therefore careful control of the static temperature must be obtained by expansion occurring simultaneously with the heat release. Secondly, since reaction rates vary with static temperature this form of combustion must be clearly understood if successful operation is to be obtained. Furthermore, simultaneous expansion is required for large values of heat release if shock waves (with accompanying losses) are to be avoided in the combustion zone. In order that the chemical reaction should proceed at the required rate, high initial static temperatures are necessary. (These are obtained in the free flight case by partial conversion of the total temperature to static temperature). The reaction rate also depends on pressure hence a range of pressures should be investigated. It can thus be seen that investigation of the combustion phenomenon requires a facility having moderate Mach Numbers and pressures and high total temperatures. Considering next the fuel injection problem: It is anticipated that fuel injection will present a further problem since it is again important that strong shock waves are avoided, and in addition the practical means of using the fuel to cool the surfaces must be determined. These two problems are complementary, and following their successful solution, high efficiency intake designs and integrated engine configurations may be considered." --

Book Description
An investigation of supersonic combustion as related to propulsive systems for high Mach number, high altitude flight is described. A method of laboratory simulation is employed which is considered to be suitable for fundamental studies of diffusional-controlled supersonic combustion under conditions approaching those of actual flight. A numerical analysis of the mixing and combustion processes for an axisymmetric hydrogen-air ducted flow system was carried out, using a computer code based upon boundary layer concepts and including the effects of finite-rate chemistry. A limited parametric study of the combustor flow field was made for a Mach number range of 1.5 to 2.5 for the injected air stream. Hydrogen injection is central and parallel to the air stream and is assumed to occur sonically. A matched pressure condition between the fuel and air streams is assumed to exist at the combustor inlet. Inlet static pressures in the range of 0.1 to 0.2 atmospheres were considered. Results of the parametric study indicated the inlet conditions required to achieve auto-ignition within a reasonable combustor length. Based on the numerical data obtained, a mixing and combustion chamber was designed and fabricated for the performance of experimental tests under conditions closely matching those of the numerical study. Experimental data from a number of laboratory tests in which supersonic combustion was obtained are presented and discussed. (Author).

Book Description
The Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineer ing (ICASE) and NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) brought together on October 2-4, 1989 experts in the various areas of com bustion with a view to expose them to some combustion problems of technological interest to LaRC and possibly foster interaction with the academic community in these research areas. The top ics chosen for this purpose were flame structure, flame stability, flame holding/extinction, chemical kinetics, turbulence-kinetics in teraction, transition to detonation, and reacting free shear layers. The lead paper set the stage by discussing the status and issues of supersonic combustion relevant to scramjet engine. Then the ex perts were called upon i) to review the current status of knowledge in the aforementioned ;:I. reas, ii) to focus on how this knowledge can be extended and applied to high-speed combustion, and iii) to suggest future directions of research in these areas. Each topic was then dealt with in a position paper followed by formal discussion papers and a general discussion involving the participants. The position papers discussed the state-of-the-art with an emphasis on key issues that needed to be resolved in the near future. The discussion papers crit ically examined these issues and filled in any lacunae therein. The edited versions of the general discussions in the form of questions from the audience and answers from the speakers are included wher ever possible to give the reader the flavor of the lively interactions that took place.

Book Description
Scramjet Combustion explores the development of a high-speed scramjet engine operating in the supersonic/hypersonic range for various air and space transport applications. The book explains the basic structure, components, working cycle, and the relevant governing equations in a clear manner that speaks to both advanced and more novice audiences. Particular attention is paid to efficient air–fuel combustion, looking at both the underlying fundamentals of combustion as well strategies for obtaining optimum combustion efficiency. Methods for reaching the chemically correct air–fuel ratio, subsequent flame, and combustion stabilization as air enters at supersonic speed are also outlined. Further, it includes the continuous on-going efforts, innovations, and advances with respect to the design modification of scramjet combustors, as well as different strategies of fuel injections for obtaining augmented performance while highlighting the current and future challenges. Outlines the fundamentals of scramjet engines including their basic structure and components, working cycle, governing equations, and combustion fundamentals affecting the combustion and mixing processes Presents new design modifications of scramjet combustors and different fuel injection strategies including combined fuel injection approaches Discusses core topics such as chemical kinetics in supersonic flow, fuel–air mixing methods, strategies for combating combustion difficulties, and subsequent flame and combustion stabilization that can be applied to scramjets Describes the pedagogy for computational approaches in simulating supersonic flows
