Supercomputers play a significant and growing role in a variety of areas important to the nation. They are used to address challenging science and technology problems. In recent years, however, progress in supercomputing in the United States has slowed. The development of the Earth Simulator supercomputer by Japan that the United States could lose its competitive advantage and, more importantly, the national competence needed to achieve national goals. In the wake of this development, the Department of Energy asked the NRC to assess the state of U.S. supercomputing capabilities and relevant R&D. Subsequently, the Senate directed DOE in S. Rpt. 107-220 to ask the NRC to evaluate the Advanced Simulation and Computing program of the National Nuclear Security Administration at DOE in light of the development of the Earth Simulator. This report provides an assessment of the current status of supercomputing in the United States including a review of current demand and technology, infrastructure and institutions, and international activities. The report also presents a number of recommendations to enable the United States to meet current and future needs for capability supercomputers.

For the past three years, Control Data has cosponsored an applications symposium at one of its CYBER 205 customer sites. Approximately 125 participants from North America and Europe attended each of the three symposia. The Institute for Computational Studies at Colorado State University hosted the first symposium at Fort Collins, Colorado, August 12-13, 1982. The second annual symposium took place in Lanham, Maryland, and was hosted by the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. This volume contains the proceedings of the Supercomputer Applications symposium held October 31-November 1, 1984, at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. The purpose of this volume is to provide a forum for users of Control Data's CYBER 205 supercomputer to exchange common experiences and to discuss results of research projects performed on the computer. Analysis of file system trace data shows that one third of all files archived are referenced again within one day and twenty five percent of the transactions to tape are requests to delete files. In many cases, individual research groups easily account for twenty percent of the total traffic to such an archival system. Finally, some of the file access characteristics are typical of standard time sharing systems; however distinct differences exist."
