Book Description
This title was first published in 2003. The essay collection explores the conjunctions of nation, gender, and visual representation in a number of countries-including Ireland, Scotland, Britain, Canada, Finland, Russia and Germany-during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The contributors show visual imagery to be a particularly productive focus for analysing the intersections of nation and gender, since the nation and nationalism, as abstract concepts, have to be "embodied" in ways that make them imaginable, especially through the means of art. They explore how allegorical female figures personify the nation across a wide range of visual media, from sculpture to political cartoons and how national architectures may also be gendered. They show how through such representations, art reveals the ethno-cultural bases of nationalisms. Through the study of such images, the essays in this volume cast new light on the significance of gender in the construction of nationalist ideology and the constitution of the nation-state. In tackling the conjunctions of nation, gender and visual representation, the case studies presented in this publication can be seen to provide exciting new perspectives on the study of nations, of gender and the history of art. The range of countries chosen and the variety of images scrutinised create a broad arena for further debate.

Book Description
The word 'everyday' is usually loaded with decidedly negative connotations. However, domestic everyday activities are not merely routine work, but also include complex, demanding tasks to solve. Even though everyday problem solving does not necessarily follow logical pathways, it is sensible and effective in handling practical problems. The studies presented in this book explore domestic everyday making, in terms of the kinds of cognitive, social, and practical tasks being faced and the types of skills needed in solving these tasks. The studies also illustrate the different research strategies appropriate to the investigation of the art and skills of domestic everyday making. The target audience of this book includes researchers and students of family and consumer studies, home economics and craft sciences, cultural studies and sociology. Because of the twofold aim of the book, it can be used as a textbook for both content as well as methodological studies.

Book Description
The awakening of national awareness and the gradual emergence of a nation state have long been issues of interest to historians, folklorists, and ethnologists. In the absence of a broader history of Finnish ethnography, the role of the researcher in the national process has remained somewhat in the background. One of the tasks of this book is to make up for this omission.

Book Description
June Swann, an English specialist on footwear and shoemaking, turns her attention to the shoes of Scandinavia from prehistory to 1950, drawing on evidence from recent excavations. Inevitably, most of the shoes date from the 17th century onwards and include remarkably well-preserved formal shoes, functional everyday shoes, clogs and boots and elaborate regional footwear that reflected the Scandinavian terrain and environment. The book is illustrated throughout with photographs, often in colour, of the footwear along with drawings that demonstrate changes in shoe technology over the centuries. Swann also discusses Migration and Viking footwear, the influence of Scandinavia's extensive trade connections on its fashion and includes comparisons with the footwear of the rest of Europe.
