Book Description
Sunshower is the story of a journey through a human experience—surviving the loss of a love by suicide, and the return of hope. Much has been written about why someone would take his or her life, and about the prevention of suicide, but there is little recorded to throw light on what it is like to endure such a dramatic severing. Sunshower begins with a portrait of Karen and Dick Kenyon's early marriage, the birth of their son, Richard, the birth and death of a baby daughter, Johanna. Then on November 3, 1978, Dick did not come home from work; instead, without warning, he took his own life. The author charts her grief process, her awareness, her questions and turmoil, and her eventual path back to life and love. Sunshower is a mystery story in the sense that life is a mystery. It is told through the eyes of one person, but all our struggles and joys are somehow one. We all love, we all lose. Surviving after suicide is only a dramatic metaphor for survival of any kind. Every day we live we are choosing life, creating life. Symbolically a sunshower is the union of sadness and joy, of rain clouds and of light. The sunshowers of our lives are our releases and baptisms into new life. This book, though it deals with and faces death, is most importantly about life and about love. Sunshower is the story of loss, but it is also a story of transformation and rebirth. “Karen Kenyon has written a remarkably honest account in SUNSHOWER. In writing of a harrowing experience, she has avoided both self-pitying sentimentality and hidden angers. It is a valuable -- if not priceless --addition to the literature of suicide.” Harold Greenwald, Ph.D.— August 6, 1981 "...we do a tremendous amount of suicide prevention work and I'm sure your contribution in the form of this book will help many people." -- Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross “SUNSHOWER has been recommended by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross to women who are in need of support--the ripple effect goes on, your gift of sharing and compassionate understanding.” -- Janet Marlow for Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

Book Description
Modernization and conversion to world religions are threatening the survival of traditional belief systems, leaving behind only mysterious traces of their existence. This book, based upon extensive research conducted over a period of nearly four decades, brings scientific rigor to one of the questions that have always attracted human curiosity: that of the origin of the dragon. The author demonstrates that both dragons and rainbows are cultural universals, that many of the traits that are attributed to dragons in widely separated parts of the planet are also attributed to rainbows, and that the number and antiquity of such shared traits cannot be attributed to chance or common inheritance, but rather to common cognitive pathways by which human psychology has responded to the natural environment in a wide array of cultures around the world.

Book Description
Listening to the sound practices of bands and musicians such as the Asian Dub Foundation or M.I.A., and spanning three decades of South Asian dance music production in the UK, Transcultural Sound Practices zooms in on the concrete sonic techniques and narrative strategies in South Asian dance music and investigates sound as part of a wider assemblage of cultural technologies, politics and practices. Carla J. Maier investigates how sounds from Hindi film music tunes or bhangra tracks have been sampled, cut, looped and manipulated, thus challenging and complicating the cultural politics of sonic production. Rather than conceiving of music as a representation of fixed cultures, this book engages in a study of music that disrupts the ways in which ethnicity has been written into sound and investigates how transcultural sound practices generate new ways of thinking about culture.

Book Description
Hip hop has long been a vehicle for protest in the United States, used by its primarily African American creators to address issues of prejudice, repression, and exclusion. But the music is now a worldwide phenomenon, and outside the United States it has been taken up by those facing similar struggles. Flip the Script offers a close look at the role of hip hop in Europe, where it has become a politically powerful and commercially successful form of expression for the children and grandchildren of immigrants from former colonies. Through analysis of recorded music and other media, as well as interviews and fieldwork with hip hop communities, J. Griffith Rollefson shows how this music created by black Americans is deployed by Senegalese Parisians, Turkish Berliners, and South Asian Londoners to both differentiate themselves from and relate themselves to the dominant culture. By listening closely to the ways these postcolonial citizens in Europe express their solidarity with African Americans through music, Rollefson shows, we can literally hear the hybrid realities of a global double consciousness.
