The photographs of Chris McCaw (born 1971) are produced with various hand-built view cameras as big as 30 by 40 inches, which are equipped with large aerial lenses designed to allow a maximum amount of light to pass through. Using large paper negatives, McCaw makes very long exposures ranging from several hours to a full day, which result in solarized final images. Besides the attractive neo-primitive qualities of his landscape imagery, the concentrated sunlight passing through the large optical elements actually scorches an etched path across the surface of the paper, rending open the charred skies to hint at a brighter light behind our sun. Sunburn brings together more than 60 of these landscapes, cooked visions in which blackened suns move stroboscopically through veiled skies that hang like curtains over vistas reduced to shadow. Anyway, now that I'm sixteen and about grown-up, I don't get bothered about that stuff so much. Just between you and me, sometimes I have these funny dreams. I know what you're thinking. No, they're not that kind. They're about zebras. Anyway, these zebras don't always look the same. Sometimes their stripes, the ones that are supposed to be white, change colors. Like red! I know a lot of girls, two I really like are Vicky and Candy. But they are not my girlfriends or anything like that. They're just friends of mine. You know, we hang out at school. Also, I think cars are cool. My friend got a Mustang, really nice, and I got this MG, not so nice, and it needed a bunch of work. Oh, I forgot to mention I got in this car wreck. Only, I'm getting a little ahead in my story. Well, I'm not going to say anything more about my personal life, so if you want the whole story, you're just going to have to read The Sunburned Zebra. Around 1945, the first sunscreen products became available. In the years to follow, a vast number of different sunscreen filters and frameworks regulating filter substances and preparations, and methods characterizing sunscreen products were developed. The perception regarding the tasks of sunscreen products changed several times - initially it was promoted as a lifestyle product, then as a skin cancer preventive means, and more recently also for anti-aging. Different purposes and the widespread use of these products have led to myriad studies and a wealth of information. In this volume, the editors present a current collection of information analyzing and discussing issues related to sunscreen products and their use. These include challenges regarding the ideal sunscreen product including filter selection and formulation issues, measurement methods, performance characterization, safety, and regulatory issues.
