Book Description
Pity Me schoolchildren are dying. The Establishment claim the Great Goddess is pulling out the weeds to make way for the flowers. But thirteen-year-old Jamie Tuff knows different, thanks to her newly wandering soul. Her Gift will set her on a path of discovery and will land her in mortal danger. What will win out? The power of fear...or of hope? Magical fantasy adventure for readers aged 10+. "The present world is often terrifying to a sensible adult. Hinton reflects its effect on youngsters in a powerfully imagined world that hums with poetry. In its pages, in the words of Yeats, a terrible beauty is born. Herein lies empathy, barreling adventure and an iconic heroine, Jamie Tuff." Charles Bane Jr., nominee as Poet Laureate of Florida.

The Book of Summer
Author: James F. David

ISBN: 1466837853
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 533
Book Description
Thanks to a gift from God, Ira Breitling has taken his followers off of Earth and colonized space. But Breitling's followers are slowly discovering their differences. So Ira takes his core followers beyond Planet America, but one follower, Mother Jones, has decided to stay behind and colonize America. A vast number of captives from the battle on Earth have been enslaved by Jones on America, and it only took a generation for racism and cruelty to set in. Summer Lund is a teenaged slave-girl on Master Rice's farm. Her mother, bearing Rice's child, fears that Summer will soon catch the eye of the slaveowner. After a vicious encounter with Master Rice's oldest son Washington, Summer flees the farm and learns of her people's past. Her journey will bring a new era to light, and change the course of Planet America. Meanwhile, after being duped by Fellowship members, Rey Mann has been marooned in a far-off frozen corner of Planet America. He must survive with no technology and only his own wits to protect him, living off the land for food and boiling ice and snow for water. His survival is fueled by a vow of vengeance toward the men who tricked him, but what he learns along his journey will bring him face to face with the God he now so vehemently denies. And a new force of darkness is on its way to America, hell-bent on destroying the entire planet. Continuing the exodus he began in Judgment Day, James F. David brings us new, exciting tales of faith and redemption and the benefits of adhering to the teachings of Christianity, even as Earth is destroyed and we begin to inhabit the far-reaching universe. Greek Astronomy
Author: Sir Thomas L. Heath
Publisher: Courier Corporation
ISBN: 0486143880
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 260
Book Description
Astronomy as a science began with the Ionian philosophers, with whom Greek philosophy and mathematics also began. While the Egyptians and Babylonians had accomplished much of astronomical worth, it remained for the unrivalled speculative genius of the Greeks, in particular, their mathematical genius, to lay the foundations of the true science of astronomy. In this classic study, a noted scholar discusses in lucid detail the specific advances made by the Greeks, many of whose ideas anticipated the discoveries of modern astronomy. Pythagoras, born at Samos about 572 B.C., was probably the first to hold that the earth is spherical in shape, while his later followers anticipated Copernicus with the then-startling hypothesis that the earth was not the center of the universe but a planet like the others. Heraclides of Pontus (c. 388–315 B.C.), a pupil of Plato, declared that the apparent daily rotation of the heavenly bodies is due, not to a rotation of the heavenly sphere about an axis through the center of the earth, but to the rotation of the earth itself around its own axis. Secondly, Heraclides discovered that Venus and Mercury revolve around the sun like satellites. Perhaps the greatest astronomer of antiquity was Hipparchus, who flourished between 161 and 126 B.C. He compiled a catalog of fixed stars to the number 850 or more, made great improvements in the instruments used for astronomical observations, and discovered the precession of the equinoxes, among other accomplishments. The astronomy of Hipparchus takes its definitive form in the Syntaxis (commonly called the Almagest) of Ptolemy, written about A.D. 150, which held the field until the time of Copernicus. The extraordinary achievements of these and many more Greek theorists are given full coverage in this erudite account, which blends exceptional clarity with a readable style to produce a work that is not only indispensable for astronomers and historians of science but easily accessible to science-minded lay readers.
