Book Description
The true story of the Gilded Age's "political twins" who brought women's suffrage and political reform to the city of Pittsburgh. Sometimes troublemakers emerge from the most unlikely of places. This true story follows the lives of two daughters of the Gilded Age--Lucy and Eliza Kennedy--who were educated at Vassar College and became leaders of the suffrage movement. Then, after the Nineteenth Amendment was passed in 1920, they spent the next forty years fighting corruption in politics and government. Tenacious, smart, and witty, they captivated crowds, disarmed their opponents, and instilled particular dread among the corrupt politicians who were the unfortunate targets of their nonpartisan crusade. Their entry across the threshold of Pittsburgh's City-County Building would reportedly invoke a flurry of hushed warnings through the halls: "The She Devils are at the door!" Together, Lucy and Eliza fought for the vote, empowered women to use it wisely, forced a mayor out of office in disgrace, took control of the city budget, exposed a series of scandals, spearheaded police reform, and launched a campaign that would eventually clear Pittsburgh of its smoky veil. Featuring the true story of two powerful women, this book comes at a propitious time, reminding us how far women have come and how vigilant we must remain.

Book Description
Social discontent and political protest have been expressed visually as well as verbally throughout the ages. Graffiti scribbles on a wall, pictures scattered in the street during marches, posters spread through the environment: all have played their part. For such agitational images represent a power strugg≤ a rebellion against an established order and a call to arms, or a passionate cry of concern for a cause. The book begins in the 16th century with the Reformation, when images could be produced in multiples. It then travels through decades and centuries of graphics: protesting against the miseries of war; satirising the foibles of royalty, politicians, religions, and society in general; calling for an end to racial discrimination and apartheid; demanding freedom from tyranny and dictatorships; struggling for LGBTQ+ rights; and, finally, attending to 21st-century concerns and Trumpisms. Each chronological chapter opens with a short introduction offering historical and artistic context to the period, followed by a copious and wide-ranging display of powerful protest graphics, grouped together by event or movement. Encompassing an astounding breadth of emotion--from hilarious satire to utter horror--Protest! is a tribute to the liberating concept of hard-won 'freedom of speech' throughout history, and which still has agency in current times.

Book Description
While historians have long recognized the importance of memorabilia to the Woman Suffrage movement, the subject has not been explored apart from a few restricted, albeit excellent, studies. Part of the problem is that such objects are scattered about in various collections and museums and can be difficult to access. Another is that most scholars do not have ready knowledge 1of the general nature and history of the type of objects (postcards, badges, sashes, toys, ceramics, sheet music, etc.) that suffragists produced. Then-new techniques in both printing and manufacturing created numerous possibilities for supporters to develop campaigns of "visual rhetoric." This work analyzes 70 different categories of suffrage memorabilia, while providing numerous images of relevant objects along the way and discussing these innovative production methods. Most important, this study looks at period accounts, often fascinating, of how, why when, and where the memorabilia were used in both America and England.

Book Description
A classic and indispensable account of graphic design history from the Industrial Revolution to the present Now in its third edition, this acclaimed survey explores the evolution of graphic design from the 19th century to the present day. Following an exploration of design’s prehistory in ancient civilizations through the Industrial Revolution, author Stephen J. Eskilson argues that modern design as we know it grew out of the influence of Victorian-age reformers. He traces the emergence of modernist design styles in the early 20th century, examining the wartime politicization of regional styles. Richly contextualized chapters chronicle the history of the Bauhaus and the rise of the International Style in the 1950s and ’60s, and the postmodern movement of the 1970s and ’80s. Contemporary considerations bring the third edition up to date, with discussions of app design, social media, emojis, big data visualization, and the use of animated graphics in film and television. The contemporary phenomenon of the citizen designer, professionals who address societal issues either through or in addition to their commercial work, is also addressed, highlighting protagonists like Bruce Mau and the Center for Urban Pedagogy. This edition also features 45 additional images, an expanded introduction and epilogue, and revised text throughout. A newly redesigned interior reinforces the fresh contents of this now-classic volume.
