This Is as Big as It Gets tells the story of two boys who meet and pair up with two girls. The four of them then banter as they try to put the world to rights while coping with stepparents, sexism, abused parents, sick parents, a plague of rats, death, suicide, and a terrorist attackbut not necessarily in that order. Interspersed with these dramas is an offbeat modern fairy tale told by one of the boys; it is so well received that he decides to write a book. His friends try to help him with ideas, and they get sidetracked by idioms, song lyrics, jokes, palindromes, and trivia. However, the book is never penned, not in this story anyway. The entire text of the story is told using no words longer than four letters because it began life as a teaching exercise for primary school children in Australia. The language is not your average American English, and for that reason, a glossary is attached by way of a translation from the Australian and English idioms and vocabulary that the story is punctuated with. This Is as Big as It Gets will, hopefully, be followed by A Bit of This and a Bit of That and then, to complete the trilogy, Amen to All That. The pattern of using no words longer than four letters in the telling of the story will continue.

This volume constitutes the Proceedings of a workshop on formal seman tics of natural languages which was held in Tiibingen from the 1st to the 3rd of December 1977. Its main body consists of revised versions of most of the papers presented on that occasion. Three supplementary papers (those by Gabbay and Sma by) are included because they seem to be of particular interest in their respective fields. The area covered by the work of scholars engaged in philosophical logic and the formal analysis of natural languages testifies to the live liness in those disciplines. It would have been impossible to aim at a complete documentation of relevant research within the limits imposed by a short conference whereas concentration on a single topic would have conveyed the false impression of uniformity foreign to a young and active field. It is hoped that the essays collected in this volume strike a reasonable balance between the two extremes. The topics discussed here certainly belong to the most important ones enjoying the attention of linguists and philosophers alike: the analysis of tense in formal and natural languages (van Benthem, Gabbay), the quickly expanding domain of generalized quantifiers (Goldblatt), the problem of vagueness (Kamp), the connected areas of pronominal reference (Smaby) and presupposition (von Stechow) and, last but not least, modal logic as a sort of all-embracing theoretical framework (Bressan). In recent years, the influence of queer theory and adjacent ideas rooted in postmodernism and critical theory has distorted the discussion around trans issues. This has led to confusion about why trans people transition, and the decentering of the actual experience of trans lives in the public trans discourse. In turn, these developments have likely contributed to a slow down in trans acceptance and even backlash in some segments of society. Queer theory sees both gender and sexuality as entirely socially constructed, and to be deconstructed. As such, queer theory resists having stable definitions and identities for everything. The problem with this approach is that it practically denies the ability of people to have a stable identity with a stable meaning at all. Right now, what trans people need most is for the rest of the world to understand us better. An ideology that basically says trans people are not understandable is certainly not what we need right now. I believe that those of us who believe in using free speech to advance trans understanding and acceptance should instead work to encourage a trans discourse that is rooted in objectively observable facts. This book is written from a broadly liberal, and at times specifically Moral Libertarian point of view. As a Moral Libertarian, I value free speech, I believe in sharing a reality with other people rooted in the objective truth, and that judgement of right and wrong is possible by observing objective facts and outcomes. This worldview is at the root of my advocacy for a return to a fact-based trans discourse, and my opposition to postmodernism more generally. However, the argument made here is also about what is best for trans people, as well as what is good for society in general. Hence, one does not necessarily need to be a Moral Libertarian, or otherwise agree with my politics, to agree with the arguments presented here.
