Additional Study of Water Droplet Median Volume Diameter (MVD) Effects on Ice Shapes
Author: National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
Publisher: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
ISBN: 9781721800100
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 32
Book Description
This paper reports the result of an experimental study in the NASA Glenn Icing Research Tunnel (IRT) to evaluate how well the MVD-independent effect identified previously might apply to SLD conditions in rime icing situations. Models were NACA 0012 wing sections with chords of 53.3 and 91.4 cm. Tests were conducted with a nominal airspeed of 77 m/s (150 kt) and a number of MVD's ranging from 15 to 100 m with LWC of 0.5 to 1 g/cu m. In the present study, ice shapes recorded from past studies and recent results at SLD and Appendix-C conditions are reviewed to show that droplet diameter is not important to rime ice shape for MVD of 30 microns or larger, but for less than 30 m drop sizes a rime ice shape transition from convex to wedge to spearhead type ice shape is observed. Tsao, Jen-Ching and Anderson, David N. Glenn Research Center NASA/CR-2005-213853, AIAA Paper 2004-0413, E-15223

Icing Cloud Calibration of the NASA Glenn Icing Research Tunnel
Author: Robert F. Ide
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 28
Book Description
The icing research tunnel at the NASA Glenn Research Center underwent a major rehabilitation in 1999, necessitating recalibration of the icing clouds. This report describes the methods used in the recalibration, including the procedure used to establish a uniform icing cloud and the use of a standard icing blade technique for measurement of liquid water content. The instruments and methods used to perform the droplet size calibration are also described. The liquid water content/droplet size operating envelopes of the icing tunnel are shown for a range of airspeeds and compared to the FAA icing certification criteria. The capabilities of the IRT to produce large droplet icing clouds is also detailed.

Three-Dimensional Water Droplet Trajectory Code Validation Using an Ecs Inlet Geometry
Author: National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
Publisher: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
ISBN: 9781724692429
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 326
Book Description
A task was completed under NASA contract, the purpose of which was to validate a three-dimensional particle trajectory code with existing test data obtained from the Icing Research Tunnel at NASA-LeRC. The geometry analyzed was a flush-mounted environmental control system (ECS) inlet. Results of the study indicated good overall agreement between analytical predictions and wind tunnel test results at most flight conditions. Difficulties were encountered when predicting impingement characteristics of the droplets less than or equal to 13.5 microns in diameter. This difficulty was corrected to some degree by modifications to a module of the particle trajectory code; however, additional modifications will be required to accurately predict impingement characteristics of smaller droplets. Breer, Marlin D. and Goodman, Mark P. Unspecified Center NASA-CR-191097, E-7853, NAS 1.26:191097 NAS3-25820; RTOP 505-62-00...
