The Symposium on Magnetic Ultrathin Films, Multilayers and Surfaces, hosted by the European Materials Research Society, was held at the Palais de la Musique et des Congré in Strasbourg, France on June 4-7, 1996. Its central theme was the relationship of magnetic properties and device performance to structure at the nano and micrometer length scale. Research on the magnetism of surfaces, ultrathin films and multilayers has increased dramatically during recent years. This development was triggered by the discovery of coupling between ferromagnetic layers across nonmagnetic spacer layers and of the giant magnetoresistance effect in systems of reduced dimension using various micro and nanofabrication techniques has become a subject of special interest. It is certainly the promising application potential of these effects in new magnetic recording device geometries which causes this intensive research, which is done both by companies and at universities and research institutes. A selection of invited and contributed papers presented at the Symposium and accepted for publication is contained in this volume. The contents of these proceedings are organized into seven sections. As conventional electronics approach the physical limits of size and speed, desire for more capable and energy efficient technologies has driven studies of the individual and collective behavior of electron spins within solid state materials to achieve new forms of information processing. Recent developments in this field of spintronics have led to the discovery particle-like magnetic textures called magnetic skyrmions where spins are arranged in a swirling, vortex-like pattern. To advance the understanding of materials capable of stabilizing magnetic skyrmions and the mechanisms that govern their stability and dynamical properties, we use spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy. The research presented here builds on the connection between the physical and magnetic structure at the surface of materials. First, we observe novel surface structures and investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of Cr(001) and Fe/Ir(111), two systems that can be used to characterize the magnetic tip of the scanning tunneling microscope. Next, we detail a technique to determine the grain structure of B20-type magnetic materials FeGe and MnGe, where the structural chirality is known to determine the chirality of the magnetic textures. The surface termination, stacking order of the layered atomic lattice, and grain chirality can all be identified by analysis of the atomic corrugation and insights from density functional theory calculations. Finally, we observe novel topological spin textures at the surface of MnGe(111). The stabilization of these is correlated to structural deformation of the film, and their three-dimensional structure is deduced based on comparison of the spin-polarized imaging with micromagnetic simulations.

It is based on heterodyne detection in a spin-polarized tunneling barrier. The experimental requirements, including a new method to suppress transmission effects, are explained. Nanoscience is of central importance in the physical and biological sciences and is now pervasive in technology. However nanomagnetism has a special role to play as magnetic properties depend uniquely on both dimensionality and lengthscales. Nanomagnetism is already central to data storage, sensor and device technologies but is increasingly being used in the life sciences and medicine. This volume aims to introduce scientists, computer scientists, engineers and technologists from diverse fields to this fascinating and technologically important new branch of nanoscience. The volume should appeal to both the interested general reader but also to the researcher wishing to obtain an overview of this fast moving field. The contributions come from acknowledged leaders in the field who each give authoritative accounts of key fundamental aspects of nanomagnetism to which they have themselves made a major contribution. After a brief introduction by the editors, Wu first surveys the fundamental properties of magnetic nanostructures. The interlayer exchange interactions within magnetic multilayer structures is next discussed by Stiles. Camley then discusses the static, dynamic and thermal properties of magnetic multilayers and nanostructures, followed by an account of the phenomenon of exchange anisotropy by Berkowitz and Kodama. This latter phenomenon is widely in current read head devices for example. Thin metal films are of ever increasing importance as the scale of devices shrinks. In order to provide new insight into the atomic details of metal film structure and the nanoscopic details of magnetic domains, efforts were made to study thin metal films on tungsten single crystals using both scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spin polarized low energy electron microscopy (SPLEEM). Difficulties were encountered with the as-delivered SPLEEM instrument which required extensive efforts to rectify. STM investigators were directed towards understanding the structure of multilayer metal films on W(111) and Al2O3(0001). Atomic models for a number of different and complex surface structures are derived for Au films on W(l10) for coverages between 0.5 and 5 monolayers. STM studies of sputter deposited Pt films on sapphire substrates, for use as seed layers for epitaxial spin valves, are described. By varying the Pt layer thickness and deposition temperature, continuous epitaxial thin films were developed. An epitaxial spin valve was constructed and assessed by magneto-transport measurements. Future opportunities for improved understanding of magnetic and electrical phenomena in thin films are briefly described. p1.
