A theoretical study is presented of hypersonic wake with and without contaminants. The nonlinear coupling equations of gas dynamics and chemical kinetics are solved numerically by a finite-difference scheme. Typical calculations of laminar and turbulent non-equilibrium wake are shown for a slender body with square root of (C sub D) (A) approximately equal to 10 cm. The results indicate that the air system and the air-plus-sodium system are in non-equilibrium at the altitude of 100,000 ft. This non-equilibrium characteristic may exist at even lower altitudes. The effects of sodium on the electron concentration are important. Since the deionization processes of sodium are relatively slow, the sodium-contaminated wake has a longer electron trail. (Author).
