An Investigation of Groundwater and Surface Water Interactions Near a Small Stream in Prince Edward Island
Author: Wesley N. Tibbet
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Groundwater
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
The province of Prince Edward Island (PEI) currently has a moratorium on the installation of high-capacity irrigation water supply wells, mainly due to concerns over potential interactions with nearby streams. The focus of this research was to conduct an investigation near a small stream in Maple Plains, PEI, and to assess the potential for the site to be used for stream depletion related research. The objectives were to determine whether the stream was gaining or losing, to establish the natural hydraulic gradients, and to characterize the overburden materials. Stream discharge measurements made in September 2016 indicated that the stream was neither gaining nor losing water. Water elevation data from five drive-point piezometers, two groundwater monitoring wells, an unused residential well, and the stream, revealed that there was an unsaturated zone between the stream and aquifer. The identification of this unsaturated zone only proves that the stream was not directly connected to the underlying aquifer, and does not prove disconnection. The groundwater elevation data also provide evidence that groundwater naturally flows in the same direction as the stream. Soil samples collected during monitoring well installation showed that there is roughly 3 m of a sand phase till overlying the fractured sandstone aquifer. The hydraulic conductivity of the till appears to decrease with depth. This is also supported by the presence of a perched groundwater system that develops during periods of increased infiltration.

Hydrologic Setting of Wetlands in the Cottonwood Lake Area, Stutsman County, North Dakota
Author: Thomas C. Winter
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Hydrology
Languages : en
Pages : 52
Book Description
Because of growing interest in the role of lakes and wetlands in the hydrology of the prairie environment, a group of wetlands in the Cottonwood Lake area, Stutsman County, N. Dak., are being instrumented for long-term hydrologic studies. The study site is on a regional topographic high near the eastern edge of the Missouri Coteau and is underlain by more than 400 feet of glacial drift, largely silty, clayey till. Long-term climatic data indicate the study area is in a water deficient area--mean annual evaporation exceeds mean annual precipitation by about 18 inches. Different methodologies are being used to compare measurements and estimates of each hydrologic component interacting with the lakes and wetlands. For example, for a 3-month period in 1979, estimates of precipitation for the study site using data collected at National Weather Service stations differed from that measured by a recording gage at the study site by several tenths of an inch for 14-day totals and differed by more than half an inch for individual storms. Numerical simulation analysis of regional groundwater flow systems shows the study site is situated in a regional recharge area, but local groundwater flow systems can discharge to lakes and wetlands within the recharge area. Instrumentation at the study site shows a complex interrelation of wetlands and groundwater. Based on data for 1979 only, some wetlands appear to recharge groundwater, some wetlands are flow-through types where groundwater enters one side and surface water seeps to groundwater on the other side, and some wetlands are discharge points for groundwater. Further, these interrelations vary throughout the year.

Groundwater Hydrology and Water Supply of Prince Edward Island
Author: L. V. Brandon
Publisher: R. Duhamel
ISBN:
Category : Groundwater
Languages : en
Pages : 50
Book Description
"Groundwater is effluent to rivers on Prince Edward Island. An approximate annual hydrologic balance can be made for various river basins, but the range in annual precipitation shows that this balance may vary widely. The movement of groundwater is permitted both by intergranular permeability and interjoint flow in the bedrock. Excellent supplies of groundwater are available and towns and industries obtain their water supply from well fields. Salt-water contamination occurs in a few wells close to the seashore, and may be the main water supply problem if larger well fields are constructed for industrial and municipal growth." --
