Combining Ability Studies in Diversified CMS Sources in SUNFLOWER
Author: Jondhale Ashish
Publisher: LAP Lambert Academic Publishing
ISBN: 9783659767777

Pages : 116
Book Description
The concept of combining ability is becoming increasingly important in plant and animal breeding. It is especially useful in connection with "testing" procedures, in which it is desired to study and compare the performances of lines in hybrid combination. Sunflower being a highly cross-pollinated crop has a great scope for increasing productivity by diversifying hybrid base. Therefore, sunflower researchers accelerated their effort to develop new diverse sources of CMS to widen the genetic base and to reduce the genetic vulnerability of sunflower hybrids. Besides, the development of new CMS sources in order to enhance the genetic diversity. Considering the fact, several diverse sources of CMS have been identified and being utilized in the CMS conversion programme. We hope that the information provided in the book will supplemented to the researchers in Plant Breeding field and encourage the research scholars to excavate various ideas for confronting with combining ability problems. We would like to place our sincere thanks to authors and publishers who helped us to complete the compilation of this book.Valuable suggestions are welcome for further enrichment of the same.

Combining Ability and Heterosis in Rapeseed
Author: Oliul Hassan

Languages : en
Pages : 108
Book Description
The study was initiated to evaluate six female parents (CMS lines) and 3 male parents (testers) in a line x tester mating design at the research field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during November 2009 to March 2010 to estimate their combining ability and heterosis.BARI Sharisha-7 was taken as check. The data recorded on 18 F1s and their parents for their combining ability indicated that GCA effect was significant for days to fifty percent flowering, plant height, No. of siliqua per plant, seed per siliqua, primary branches &secondary branches per plant and seed yield per plant . The specific combining ability (SCA) effect was significant for all the characters. High ratio of SCA and GCA variance was observed, indicating preponderance of non additive gene effects in the inheritance of the yield and yield relating characters under study. Among the lines, CMS2, CMS3 and CMS5 were found good general combiners. But seven hybrids were found good specific combiner among eighteen hybrids. The average heterosis for seed yield of eighteen hybrids over mid parent was 19.26% and that of better parent and standard check was7.96% and 73.90% respectively."
