In the sixteenth century, a period of proliferating transatlantic travel and exploration, and, latterly, religious civil wars in France, the ship is freighted with political and religious, as well as poetic, significance; symbolism that reaches its height when ships--both real and symbolic--are threatened with disaster. The Direful Spectacle argues that, in the French Renaissance, shipwreck functions not only as an emblem or motif within writing, but as a part, or the whole, of a narrative, in which the dynamics of spectatorship and of co-operation are of constant concern. The possibility of ethical distance from shipwreck--imagined through the Lucretian suave mari magno commonplace--is constantly undermined, not least through a sustained focus on the corporeal. This book examines the ways in which the ship and the body are made analogous in Renaissance shipwreck writing; bodies are described and allegorized in nautical terms, and, conversely, ships themselves become animalized and humanized. Secondly, many texts anticipate that the description of shipwreck will have an affect not only on its victims, but on those too of spectators, listeners, and readers. This insistence on the physicality of shipwreck is also reflected in the dynamic of bricolage that informs the production of shipwreck texts in the Renaissance. The dramatic potential of both the disaster and the process of rebuilding is exploited throughout the century, culminating in a shipwreck tragedy. By the late Renaissance, shipwreck is not only the end, but often forms the beginning of a story.

Excerpt from Studies in the French Renaissance All except two of the papers contained in this volume have appeared before in some form or another. But all have been revised, added to, and in some cases largely rewritten. The result is that nearly half the volume consists of new matter. The first paper, "The University of Caen," was originally printed in a volume entitled Fasciculus Joanni Willis Clark dicatus, in which many friends of the late J.W. Clark united to express their sense of his lifelong devotion to the cause of knowledge and the service of the University. My own contribution seemed a fitting tribute from an alumnus of Henry VI's twin foundations of Eton and Kings College, and I was pleased to find that one of the Rectors of the University of Caen was in many respects a prototype of our friend. He was not only Registrary of his University, but he was distinguished for his devotion to its interests; he gave freely of his books to its library; and he wrote a play for the students, in which he took the chief part. The paper on "The Prose Romances of Chivalry" appeared in French in the Revue du seizieme Steele for 1919; besides translating it I have carefully revised it. "Rabelais and Geographical Discovery" was contributed to the Modern Language Review from 1906 to 1910. "Rabelais and Henri II" is practically new, only six pages having appeared before - in French, in the Revue du seizieme Siecle (1907 and1916). The first part of "Rabelais and the Fifth Book," which relates to the He Sonante, was published in the Modern Language Review for 1906-7; in the second part I have examined the rest of the book. It is for others to determine how far I have solved the long-disputed question of Rabelais's authorship. The account of "Humanism under Francis I" is an expanded and practically rewritten version of an article in the English Historical Review(1900). Even now it does not pretend to be more than a sketch of a small part of a very large subject - the history of French Humanism - which still awaits its historian. Originally published in 1584, Thevet’s collection contains over two hundred biographical sketches, detailing the lives of important persons from antiquity to the sixteenth century. Edward Benson and Roger Schlesinger have translated and annotated Thevet’s portraits of his contemporaries, and divided them into three categories: monarchs, aristocrats, and scholars.
