Book Description
Historians of rhetoric have long worked to recover women's education in reading and writing, but have only recently begun to explore women's speaking practices, from the parlor to the platform to the varied types of institutions where women learned elocutionary and oratorical skills in preparation for professional and public life. This book fills an important gap in the history of rhetoric and suggests new paths for the way histories may be told in the future, tracing the shifting arc of women's oratorical training as it develops from forms of eighteenth-century rhetoric into institutional and extrainstitutional settings at the end of the nineteenth century and diverges into several distinct streams of community-embodied theory and practice in the twentieth. Treating key rhetors, genres, settings, and movements from the early republic to the present, these essays collectively challenge and complicate many previous claims made about the stability and development of gendered public and private spheres, the decline of oratorical culture and the limits of women's oratorical forms such as elocution and parlor rhetorics, and women's responses to rhetorical constraints on their public speaking. Enriching our understanding of women's oratorical education and practice, this cutting-edge work makes an important contribution to scholarship in rhetoric and communication.

Book Description
Excerpt from Analytic Elocution: Containing Studies, Theoretical and Practical, of Expressive Speech The theory and practice of a true method should develop the vocal powers, side by side with the growth of the mind, and by the time the student has reached the high schools and institutions of advanced learning, he should be able to deliver his essays and papers with the same proficiency that he displays in their verbal or written form. The scholar, in gaining control and use of the voice in the expres sion of all the emotions, unconsciously to himself, overcomes that constrained, awkward bearing; which in many cases arises from the conviction that he does not know how to do that which is required of him. I do not consider that the treatment of the subject in the present manual is an exhaustive one. The art is, it may be said, in its infancy, and certain principles require elaboration which in time will be universally understood. Book Description
Emerging in the 1850s, elocutionists recited poetry or drama with music to create a new type of performance. The genre--dominated by women--achieved remarkable popularity. Yet the elocutionists and their art fell into total obscurity during the twentieth century. Marian Wilson Kimber restores elocution with music to its rightful place in performance history. Gazing through the lenses of gender and genre, Wilson Kimber argues that these female artists transgressed the previous boundaries between private and public domains. Their performances advocated for female agency while also contributing to a new social construction of gender. Elocutionists, proud purveyors of wholesome entertainment, pointedly contrasted their "acceptable" feminine attributes against those of morally suspect actresses. As Wilson Kimber shows, their influence far outlived their heyday. Women, the primary composers of melodramatic compositions, did nothing less than create a tradition that helped shape the history of American music.

Book Description
Excerpt from Elocution the Sources and Elements of Its Power: A Textbook for Schools and Colleges, and a Book for Every Public Speaker, and Student of the English Language The author of this work has been engaged in the practice of public speaking, almost without interruption, for thirty years; during the last ten of which, he has also been a systematic student and teacher of the art of elocution. When he accepted the chair of Belles Lettres in Princeton College, in 1860, he received a special request from the Board of Trustees to work up this much neglected department of education although it was not properly included in the duties of his professorship; and with this object in view, they gave him a laborious and faithful assistant in Prof. S. G Peabody. The notes and criticisms, which gradually accumulated upon his hands in successive courses of instruction and training, are here offered to the public in a systematic form, now that his work in the College is drawing to a close. The attention of teachers and students of this art, is requested, in appreciation of the following points. 1. Nearly one half of the work consists in the exhibition of the intellectual, moral, esthetical and physical sources of power in delivery, which, it is believed, have never before been treated of as included in the art of elocution.
