Book Description
Excerpt from Student Life and Customs This volume aims to be a general introduction to the subject of student life, and as such presents only the main outlines. The lack of an extensive monographic literature treating critically of student societies in the different colleges and universities, prevents, for the present, any more pretentious and exhaustive work. If the present study shall stimulate others to fill the seri ous gap which exists in the literature Of the subject, it will have accomplished one of its main purposes. It is hoped that the facts herein collected will be of serv ice to that group Of pedagogical thinkers, which since the days Of Froebel has made spontaneity the touch stone of educational progress. Book Description
Excerpt from An English Student's Wander-Year in America The slowness with which English people adapt them selves to other social codes and customs often gives a very unfortunate impression. They will continue to bow stiffly when introduced, although the rest of the world extends a cordial hand. They will use both knife and fork through out an entire meal, whereas all American children are taught to cut up their meat, lay the knife down, and con tinne operations with the fork in the right hand. They cannot bring themselves to express gratification at the first sight of a perfect stranger. Smiles, perhaps, in their less sunny atmosphere are too rare to be wasted on chance acquaintances. These sound trivial matters, but a little reflection will show how far a slight difference in social manners may keep people apart. Book Description
Excerpt from Howrah The deep channel alternates from left to right and vice cersa according to the windings of the river, except where deflected by the large tributaries which debouch into it at the southern limit of this district. Proceeding from Howrah Bridge, the deep channel runs on the Calcutta side in the Calcutta Reach past the Fort and Kidderpore to Garden Reach. At Rajganj, Opposite Hangman Point, it crosses over to the Howrah Side, and follows the Sankrail Reach as far as Melancholy (menikhali) Point. It then zigzags from left to right at each bend. Book Description
Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others. Book Description
Excerpt from Social Customs Thus it will be seen that in treating of our etiquette one must necessarily avoid as far as possible ex cathedra or absolute statements, while one must also beware of confusing the reader by offering too many alternatives and showing too many possible paths. The writer has therefore striven to avoid dogmatism on the one hand and ambiguity on the other, giving decided opinions where it seemed best to do so, and in other cases mentioning the various views that are taken. Of those subjects upon which doctors disagree. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
