Book Description
Artist Strong-Cuevas (b. 1929) says her work "expresses thoughts about universal consciousness, space and time, and inner mediation." Known for her sculptures made from bronze, stainless steel, and aluminum, Strong-Cuevas's art often portrays the human head and plays with scale. Her drawings are no different. They express the same themes, but are rarely used as a diagram for her sculptures. A companion to Strong-Cuevas Sculpture, this volume is a beautifully presented retrospective of Strong-Cuevas's drawings over the last 40 years. The book features 190 images, arranged thematically, and explores the recurring themes in Strong-Cuevas's art, regardless of medium. With a foreword by art critic Jan Garden Castro, Strong-Cuevas Drawings offers a closer look at the artist's process of creating expressive works.

Book Description
Exhibition is a vital component of art education, yet most teachers have no formal training or expertise in designing and producing art exhibits. In this book, David Burton offers a comprehensive, hands-on approach with an emphasis on engaging students to develop, implement, and evaluate their artwork. He breaks down the exhibition process into five major phases: theme development, exhibition design, exhibition installation, publicity, and receptions. Each phase is exemplified with cases based on actual teacher experiences. Including a review of the historical development of exhibitions, this accessible volume: emphasizes an active role for students in the exhibition process, exploring the enormous power exhibitions have in influencing learning in visual arts education; describes the concepts and skills students and teachers need in each phase of creating an exhibit; provides supportive case studies and photographs to illustrate exhibition theme, design, and venue; and covers assessment and practical teaching strategies related to exhibition.

Book Description
Traditional historical documentaries strive to project a sense of objectivity, producing a top-down view of history that focuses on public events and personalities. In recent decades, in line with historiographical trends advocating “history from below,” a different type of historical documentary has emerged, focusing on tightly circumscribed subjects, personal archives, and first-person perspectives. Efrén Cuevas categorizes these films as “microhistorical documentaries” and examines how they push cinema’s capacity as a producer of historical knowledge in new directions. Cuevas pinpoints the key features of these documentaries, identifying their parallels with written microhistory: a reduced scale of observation, a central role given to human agency, a conjectural approach to the use of archival sources, and a reliance on narrative structures. Microhistorical documentaries also use tools specific to film to underscore the affective dimension of historical narratives, often incorporating autobiographical and essayistic perspectives, and highlighting the role of the protagonists’ personal memories in the reconstruction of the past. These films generally draw from family archives, with an emphasis on snapshots and home movies. Filming History from Below examines works including Péter Forgács’s films dealing with the Holocaust such as The Maelstrom and Free Fall; documentaries about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; Rithy Panh’s work on the Cambodian genocide; films about the internment of Japanese Americans during the Second World War such as A Family Gathering and History and Memory; and Jonas Mekas’s chronicle of migration in his diary film Lost, Lost, Lost.

Book Description
This landmark collection brings together a range of exciting new comparative work in the burgeoning field of hemispheric studies. Scholars working in the fields of Latin American studies, Asian American studies, American studies, American literature, African Diaspora studies, and comparative literature address the urgent question of how scholars might reframe disciplinary boundaries within the broad area of what is generally called American studies. The essays take as their starting points such questions as: What happens to American literary, political, historical, and cultural studies if we recognize the interdependency of nation-state developments throughout all the Americas? What happens if we recognize the nation as historically evolving and contingent rather than already formed? Finally, what happens if the "fixed" borders of a nation are recognized not only as historically produced political constructs but also as component parts of a deeper, more multilayered series of national and indigenous histories? With essays that examine stamps, cartoons, novels, film, art, music, travel documents, and governmental publications, Hemispheric American Studies seeks to excavate the complex cultural history of texts and discourses across the ever-changing and stratified geopolitical and cultural fields that collectively comprise the American hemisphere. This collection promises to chart new directions in American literary and cultural studies.

Book Description
A girl's friendship with a lonely black hole leads her to face her own sadness in this original, funny, and touching middle grade novel for fans of Crenshaw and Flora & Ulysses. When eleven-year-old Stella Rodriguez shows up at NASA to request that her recording be included in Carl Sagan's Golden Record, something unexpected happens: A black hole follows her home, and sets out to live in her house as a pet. The black hole swallows everything he touches, which is challenging to say the least—but also turns out to be a convenient way to get rid of those items that Stella doesn't want around. Soon the ugly sweaters her aunt has made for her all disappear within the black hole, as does the smelly class hamster she's taking care of, and most important, all the reminders of her dead father that are just too painful to have around. It's not until Stella, her younger brother, Cosmo, the family puppy, and even the bathroom tub all get swallowed up by the black hole that Stella comes to realize she has been letting her own grief consume her. And that's not the only thing she realizes as she attempts to get back home. This is an astonishingly original and funny adventure with a great big heart.
