Book Description
This collection examines the intersections between the personal and the political in travel writing, and the dialectic between mobility and stasis, through an analysis of specific cases across geographical and historical boundaries. The authors explore the various ways in which travel texts represent actual political conditions and thus engage in discussions about national, transnational, and global citizenship; how they propose real-world political interventions in the places where the traveler goes; what tone they take toward political or socio-political violence; and how they intersect with political debates. Travel writing can be viewed as political in a purely instrumental sense, but, as this volume also demonstrates, travel writing’s reception and ideological interventions also transform personal and cultural realities. This book thus examines the ways in which politics’ material effects inform and intersect with personal experience in travel texts and engage with travel’s dialectic of mobility and stasis. In spite of globalization and efforts to eradicate the colonial vision in travel writing and in travel writing criticism, this vision persists in various and complex ways. While the travelogue can be a space of discursive and direct oppression, these essays suggest that the travelogue is also a narrative space in which the traveler employs the genre to assert authority over his or her experiences of mobility. This book will be an important contribution for interdisciplinary scholars with interests in travel writing studies, global and transnational studies, women’s studies, multicultural studies, the social sciences, and history.

Book Description
Bold Venture tells the nearly forgotten story of the American airmen who flew perilous combat missions over Hong Kong during the Second World War. Steven K. Bailey sheds new light on the American military campaign against Japanese forces in occupied China. From the first reconnaissance flights over Hong Kong by lone pilots in 1942 to the massive multi-squadron air strikes of 1945, he describes the complex history of American air operations in the China theater and paints an indelible portrait of the American air raids on Hong Kong and the airmen who were shot down over the city. Today unexploded aircraft bombs are unearthed with frightening regularity by construction crews in Hong Kong. Residents are eager to know where these bombs originated, who dropped them, when, and what the targets were. Bailey's account answers some of these questions and provides a unique historical perspective for Americans seeking to understand the complexities of military involvement.

Book Description
The year is 2005. The worlds worst modern catastrophe is visiting itself on China. Avian Flu (H5N1) is estimated by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to kill up to 150 million people, worldwide. The deadly virus has only to complete its leap from fowl, to human cross-contamination. China has already killed millions of domestic chickens, ducks, and geese. But the slaughter was a double-edged sword. They have killed the poultry earmarked to keep Chinas citizens from starvation during the 2005-2006 winter, which has been forecasted, to one of the most ferocious in five decades. China also is convinced that the United States new ballistic missile defense program is targeted at neutralizing her minuscule nuclear deterrent, relegating her to lifetime servitude to the Americans, the worlds last remaining superpower. Beijing party leaders vow that will never happen. The Peoples Republic of China must become a modern superpower. Only then will she be able to demand the outright monetary grants she needs to survive. Modernization of her army will cost 100 billion US dollars. Beijing knows that sum resides in the coffers of Hong Kong. Thus Operation Hongse Spider is born.

Book Description
In our mobile world, travel memoirs are a staple. And books about prayer line the shelves of readers who seek to grow spiritually through the timeless practice of conversing with God. But books combining travel with prayer are rare, and it is within this void that Daniel Pawley’s masterful memoir of traveling the world, with prayer as its backdrop, establishes itself as an essential companion to both subjects. Starting with a travel/prayer template bequeathed in childhood by his parents, Pawley then recalls life-altering experiences as an adult in fifty locations spread across six continents, each illuminated by the soulful prayers of ancient and modern seekers. Inspired stops in places like exotic Bali and raucous Morocco, as well as pain-framed settings such as Chernobyl and Auschwitz, combine to weave a tapestry seen more vibrantly in prayer’s revealing light. The result is a narrative of prayer’s mysterious ability to provide hope and stabilizing faith in a world threatened by hate, division, and unbelief.
