Book Description
A multistage analysis routine for prediction of metal matrix composite strength and life has been developed. It uses micromechanics to predict material stresses, strains, and crack initiation under load. It uses macromechanics for load redistributions caused by geometry, local failures, and crack growth. This routine can be used to predict lamina and laminate stiffnesses, stresses about a notch and through the net section, laminate strength (notched or unnotched), crack initiation lives, crack growth, and residual strength. The routine is user-friendly and emphasizes rapid analysis techniques, which allow the program to be run interactively. The purpose of this routine is to provide quick and accurate strength and life predictions for metal matrix composites based on limited test data.

Book Description
The concept of reinforcing a material by the use of a fiber is not a new one. The Egyptian brick layer employed the same principle more than three thousand years ago when straw was incorporated into the bricks. More recent examples of fiber reinforced composites are steel-reinforced concrete, nylon and rayon cord reinforced tires, and fiberglass reinforced plastics. In the last several years considerable progress has been made on new composite structures particularly utilizing boron (on tungsten substrate) fibers in various matrices. Many of these advances have been reviewed recently by P. M. Sinclair1 and by Alexander, Shaver, and Withers.2 An excellent earlier survey is available by Rauch Sutton, and McCreight.3 Boron-reinforced epoxy composites are being fabricated and tested as jet engine components, fuselage components, and even as a complete aircraft wing because of the tremendous gain in experimentally demonstrated properties such as modulus, strength, and fatigue resistance, particularly on a weight normalized (e.g., strength/density) basis. Other than glass/epoxy and boron/ epoxy composites and perhaps boron/aluminum, the systems now under study are in the early stages of research and development. These include other boron/metal composites, graphite/polymer, graphite/metal, graphite/graphite, alumina/metal, and aligned eutectic (directionally, solidified) combinations. As Sinclair points out, designers are wary about filamentary composites becausethere is little background information and scant experience.

Book Description
Composite Materials, Volume 5: Fracture and Fatigue covers the concepts, theories, and experiments on fracture and fatigue behavior of composite materials. The book discusses the fracture of particulate composites, including metal, polymer, and ceramic matrices; relates micromechanics effects to composite strength; and summarizes the various theories relating constituent properties and microstructure to fracture. The text also describes differing theories regarding the strength and fracture of composites; and the theory and experiment relating to time-dependent fracture covering both long-term as well as dynamic fracture. The fatigue of both polymer- and metal-matrix composites and the factors influencing the toughness of both brittle and ductile matrix composites are also considered. Design engineers, materials scientist, materials engineers, and metallurgists will find the book useful.
