Book Description
Excerpt from Strategies of Psychotherapy Therapists may range from indignation to squeamishness in their reao tions to the notion of deliberately manipulating the patient as presented in the section on directive therapy. I would caution those who have not tried the kind of techniques Haley describes, or that I have described in another publication, to either try this kind of intervention or speak to a friend who has weathered such an encounter. When Freud discovered transference, he discovered that the patient and therapist were involved in an interactional game that required skill on the therapist's part if both he and the patient were to benefit by the encounter. If the therapist is genuinely interested in helping the patient, and if he is experienced so that he can bring his skill to bear in at least a partially predictable way, then the style of the game he plays with the patient can vary widely and still be helpful. Therapy becomes manipulative, in the opprobrious sense of this term, only when the therapist is using the patient for various covert financial and/ or power reasons that have little to do with the pa tient's best interests. It is an honor to have been asked to write the foreword to this book especially since I believe it to be unique. We have all been in need of it for some time. Book Description
Excerpt from Psychotherapy Hence the whole first part of this book is an ab stract discussion and its first chapters have not even any direct relation to disease. I am convinced that both physicians and ministers and all who are in prsc tical contact with these important questions ought to be brought to such painstaking and perhaps fatiguing inquiry into principles before the facts are reached. To those who seek a discussion of life facts alone, the whole first part will of course appear to be a tedious way around; they may turn directly to the second and third parts. Book Description
Excerpt from Suggestion and Psychotherapy It is very possible that I have not succeeded throughout in expressing myself in as simple terms as might be desired; if this is so I must ask the reader's forbearance. While I have started from elementary facts and from them have proceeded to more complicated ideas, I have nevertheless been obliged to accredit my readers with a certain degree of general scientific culture. Such readers certainly will not hesitate to reread any chapter which at first may to them seem obscure. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Psychology and Psychotherapy In the present work the author has stated the psychological factors underlying those forms of nervous reaction, which form the borderline disorders known as hysteria, neurasthenia, psychasthenia and the compulsion neuroses. He has not attempted to give a clinical picture of these reactions, but more especially his object has been to indicate the psychological mechanism of their causation and the principles concerned in their treatment by psycho therapy. Book Description
Excerpt from Psycho-Therapy, Its Doctrine and Practice There must be always considerable satisfaction to the writer of a first book when the edition is exhausted within a few months of its publication, and I confess to this feeling in an additional degree because in the present work I have endeavoured to put forward Psycho-therapy from a new point of view, and one which I venture to think is especially my own. Its appearance has also marked my first visit to England, and, as the production of a new comer, has won its way purely on merits of its own. I am very glad to find that it has possessed sufficient warrants in the eyes of the English public to have achieved such a measure of success.
