When I wrote this story, I wasn't aware of the similarity. Mark Twain's stories are not as widespread in Germany as they are in the USA, and it's been ages since I read the book. Only when a couple of reviewers pointed it out, I realized where my initial idea had come from. Despite the influence, this story is not a retelling but a stand-alone story in its own right which includes many details about everyday life in Europe during the Middle Ages.
