Stories from Home
Author: Margaret Ponsonby
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317049861
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 259
Book Description
Most homes in the past were not elite, wealthy interiors complete with high fashion furnishings, designed by well-known architects and designers, as many domestic histories often seem to have assumed. As this book makes clear, there were in fact an enormous variety of house interiors in England during the period 1750-1850, reflecting the location, status and gender of particular householders, as well as their changing attitudes, tastes and aspirations. By focusing on non-metropolitan homes, which represented the majority of households in England, this study highlights the need for historians to look beyond prevailing attitudes that often reduce interiors to generic descriptions based on high fashions of the decorative arts. Instead it shows how numerous social and cultural influences affected the manner in which homes were furnished and decorated. Issues such as the availability of goods, gender, regional taste, income, the second-hand market, changing notions of privacy and household hierarchies and print culture, could all have a significant impact on domestic furnishing. The study ends with a discussion of how domestic interiors of historic properties have been presented and displayed in modern times, highlighting how competing notions of the past can cloud as well as illuminate the issue. Combining cultural history and qualitative analysis of evidence, this book presents a new way of looking at 'ordinary' and 'provincial' homes that enriches our understanding of English domestic life of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Tales from the Detroit Pistons Locker Room
Author: Perry A. Farrell
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1683580699
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 209
Book Description
Some call them the Bad Boys, others just call them bad news—either way, few teams carry the passion, power, and determination exuded by the Detroit Pistons. A collection of incredible basketball talent revered in Detroit and despised throughout the rest of the NBA, the Pistons are anything and everything but boring. Now Perry A. Farrell will take fans into the locker room and onto the Pistons court in this newly revised edition of Tales from the Detroit Pistons Locker Room. With help from Pistons legends Rick Mahorn and Joe Dumars, Farrell shares stories that cover all the key characters, including Isiah Thomas, Bill Laimbeer, John Salley, Vinny Johnson, Dennis Rodman, and coach Chuck Daly. Mahorn discusses the wars with the Bulls, Celtics, and Knicks, and championship battles with the Lakers and Blazers. The book also examines the sorry state of the franchise before the two titles, their attempts to recapture their NBA magic with Grant Hill and Jerry Stackhouse, and the recent run of success that Dumars is having as the team’s general manager. Mahorn’s role as color analyst for Pistons radio broadcasts has kept him in the loop as Dumars has added players like Rip Hamilton, Rasheed Wallace, and Darko Milicic, along with coach Larry Brown, over the past few seasons. Sharing stories from his playing and announcing days is a part of what makes Tales from the Detroit Pistons Locker Room a must-have for any Pistons fan.

The Old Lady Who Wrote Stories For Her Son
Author: P.R. Hernon
Publisher: FriesenPress
ISBN: 1525598767
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 187
Book Description
The Old Lady Who Wrote Stories For Her Son is a book of clever and intriguing flash fiction and short stories about connections—between words, ideas, and people. When a young man named Jake finds two boxes of envelopes in an otherwise empty apartment that he is cleaning out in an assisted living complex, his life is forever impacted. Some of the envelopes in the boxes contain a series of random words, and the other envelopes hold stories created from them. With a little digging, Jake learns that the series of words were sent to the sick, elderly, and now deceased former resident of the apartment from her disabled adult son, who was unable to visit her. Hoping to keep his mother’s mind active, he challenged her to knit the words into stories that she could share back with him. Some of these stories are about people reaching across space, generations, and even from beyond the grave to change others’ lives. Sometimes these changes are good; other times they are deadly. Some of the stories are about losing people; others are about finding them. But most importantly, as a collection, the stories move Jake to make his own connections.

Hear Our Stories
Author: Jessica C. Harris
Publisher: Stanford University Press
ISBN: 1503641066
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 297
Book Description
Despite focused efforts to stop the perpetration of campus sexual violence, the statistic that one in four college women will experience such violence has remained steady over the last sixty years. The number of higher education institutions under federal Title IX investigation for mishandling sexual violence cases also continues to grow. In Hear Our Stories, Jessica Harris demonstrates how preventive efforts often fall short because they lack intersectional perspectives, and often obscure how sexual violence is imbued with racial significance. Drawing on interviews with Women of Color student survivors, staff, and documents from three different universities, this book analyzes sexual violence on the college campus from an intersectional lens, centering the stories of Women of Color. Harris explores the intersectional realities of campus sexual violence, including survivors' racialized and gendered experiences with campus rape culture, institutional betrayal, prevention programming, reporting and disclosing, and feminist and anti-racist movements. Hear Our Stories challenges dominant approaches to campus sexual violence that too-often stall the implementation of more effective sexual violence prevention and response efforts that could offer transformative outcomes for all students.
