When anisotropic particles such as clay are subjected to a shear stress in a flowing suspension they align themselves in the direction of the flow. When the shear stress is removed the particles will relax to a random orientation. The rate at which this relaxation occurs is related to the size of the particles. Watson and Jennings (1992) studied the rotational relaxation of anisotropic particles in dilute suspension. They used an electric pulse to align the particles and measured the birefringence of the suspension as the particles relaxed to random orientations when the pulse was switched off. They found that the initial rate of relaxation and the area under the relaxation curve could be used to calculate the particle size of the sample. The research described in this thesis uses flow through a narrow tube to cause clay particles to align and then their rotational relaxation is studied by measuring the change in conductivity between the flowing state and the non-flowing state. The development of the instrument is described, and the experiments carried out to determine the optimum operating conditions for maximum change in conductivity. The conclusion was that the technique, although not a complete success at this stage, could with further work and modifications provide data on the median size and spread of a distribution of anisotropic particles.

The advancement of human civilization has been intimately associated with the exploitation of raw materials. In fact the distinction of the main historical eras is based on the type of raw materials used. Hence, passage from the Paleolithic and Neolithic Age to the Bronze Age is characterized by the introduction of basic metals mainly copper, zinc and tin in human activities; the Iron Age is marked by the use of iron as the predominant metal. Characterization of industrial minerals is important for their assessment and can be demanding and often complicated. This new volume, co-published by the European Mineralogical Union and the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain & Ireland, is based on papers presented at an EMU-Erasmus IP School which was held in the Technical University of Crete, Chania, Greece.
