Book Description
U.S. business data are used broadly, providing the building blocks for key national-as well as regional and local-statistics measuring aggregate income and output, employment, investment, prices, and productivity. Beyond aggregate statistics, individual- and firm-level data are used for a wide range of microanalyses by academic researchers and by policy makers. In the United States, data collection and production efforts are conducted by a decentralized system of statistical agencies. This apparatus yields an extensive array of data that, particularly when made available in the form of microdata, provides an unparalleled resource for policy analysis and research on social issues and for the production of economic statistics. However, the decentralized nature of the statistical system also creates challenges to efficient data collection, to containment of respondent burden, and to maintaining consistency of terms and units of measurement. It is these challenges that raise to paramount importance the practice of effective data sharing among the statistical agencies. With this as the backdrop, the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) asked the Committee on National Statistics of the National Academies to convene a workshop to discuss interagency business data sharing. The workshop was held October 21, 2005. This report is a summary of the discussions of that workshop. The workshop focused on the benefits of data sharing to two groups of stakeholders: the statistical agencies themselves and downstream data users. Presenters were asked to highlight untapped opportunities for productive data sharing that cannot yet be exploited because of regulatory or legislative constraints. The most prominently discussed example was that of tax data needed to reconcile the two primary business lists use by the statistical agencies.

Book Description
Research Methods and Statistics in Psychology provides students with the most readable and comprehensive survey of research methods, statistical concepts and procedures in psychology today. Assuming no prior knowledge, this bestselling text takes you through every stage of your research project, giving advice on planning and conducting studies, analysing data and writing up reports, both quantitative and qualitative. It incorporates diversity and includes a large section on cross-cultural psychology methods and issues. The book continues its long tradition of integrating qualitative issues into methods chapters as well as providing two chapters dedicated to qualitative methods. It provides clear coverage of experimental, interviewing and observational methods; psychological testing; and statistical procedures which include nominal-level tests, ordinal and interval two-condition tests, simple and multi-factorial ANOVA designs, correlation, multiple regression, log linear analysis, factor analysis and, new with this edition, logistic regression. It features detailed and illustrated SPSS instructions for all these and other procedures, eliminating the need for an extra SPSS textbook. New edition features include: • Logistic regression. • Greater detail of online research methods. • Expanded coverage of report writing guidelines. • Concepts illustrated with up-to-date published research examples. • Instructor and Student Resource website signposted throughout the book to improve student usability. Each chapter contains a glossary, key terms and newly integrated exercises, ensuring that key concepts are understood. This book is extended and enhanced by a fully updated and refreshed Instructor and Student Resource website, which includes: • A collection of interactive multiple-choice questions with detailed feedback, providing the opportunity to test understanding at different levels. • Practical exercises that give students the opportunity to put their learning into practice. • Links to further reading and sources to expand knowledge. • Test banks for each chapter to save instructors time. Book Description
• Students get valuable practice in interpreting statistical reporting as it actually appears in journals. In each of the 62 exercises, your students will read a brief excerpt of statistical reporting from a published research article. • Each exercise begins with guidelines for interpreting the statistics in the excerpt. • The questions on the excerpts promote learning by requiring students to · interpret information in tables and figures, · perform simple calculations to further their interpretations, · critique data-reporting techniques, and · evaluate procedures used to collect data. • Each exercise covers a limited number of statistics, making it easy for you to coordinate the exercises with lectures and a main textbook. • The questions in each exercise are divided into two parts: (1) Factual Questions and (2) Questions for Discussion. The factual questions require careful reading for details, while the discussion questions show students that interpreting statistics is more than a mathematical exercise. These questions require them to apply good judgment as well as statistical reasoning in arriving at appropriate interpretations. • Thirteen new exercises interspersed throughout show how to interpret a greater array of statistical reporting.

Book Description
• In Real Data, students predict the answers to interesting questions. Then they analyze data supplied by leading researchers to see if there is empirical support for their predictions. • Students get practice in computing all the major statistics usually covered in an introductory statistics course. • Because each of the 35 exercises in Part A deals with only a limited number of statistics, the workbook is easily coordinated with all introductory statistics textbooks. • Part A emphasizes small data sets that are useful whether students are using calculators or computers. The exercises in this part are highly structured so students know exactly what is required of them. • Part B provides larger data sets for comprehensive analysis by computer users. Loosely structured, the data sets allow you to specify which statistics should be computed. • Sample topics: Kissing and Sexual Harassment; Basic Trust of Rape Survivors; Gambling and Stealing; Pregnancy Risk Among Adolescents Who Had Been Sexually Abused; Boys Interacting with Their Fathers; Racial Differences in Seeking Medical Assistance; Instructors’ Clothing and Student Evaluations; Students’ Attitudes Toward Math; and Physician-Assisted Suicide. • Using real data for analysis makes the traditional statistics class come alive.

Book Description
This volume presents theoretical developments, applications and computational methods for the analysis and modeling in behavioral and social sciences where data are usually complex to explore and investigate. The challenging proposals provide a connection between statistical methodology and the social domain with particular attention to computational issues in order to effectively address complicated data analysis problems. The papers in this volume stem from contributions initially presented at the joint international meeting JCS-CLADAG held in Anacapri (Italy) where the Japanese Classification Society and the Classification and Data Analysis Group of the Italian Statistical Society had a stimulating scientific discussion and exchange.

Book Description
Due to the scale and complexity of data sets currently being collected in areas such as health, transportation, environmental science, engineering, information technology, business and finance, modern quantitative analysts are seeking improved and appropriate computational and statistical methods to explore, model and draw inferences from big data. This book aims to introduce suitable approaches for such endeavours, providing applications and case studies for the purpose of demonstration. Computational and Statistical Methods for Analysing Big Data with Applications starts with an overview of the era of big data. It then goes onto explain the computational and statistical methods which have been commonly applied in the big data revolution. For each of these methods, an example is provided as a guide to its application. Five case studies are presented next, focusing on computer vision with massive training data, spatial data analysis, advanced experimental design methods for big data, big data in clinical medicine, and analysing data collected from mobile devices, respectively. The book concludes with some final thoughts and suggested areas for future research in big data. Advanced computational and statistical methodologies for analysing big data are developed Experimental design methodologies are described and implemented to make the analysis of big data more computationally tractable Case studies are discussed to demonstrate the implementation of the developed methods Five high-impact areas of application are studied: computer vision, geosciences, commerce, healthcare and transportation Computing code/programs are provided where appropriate
