Book Description
Advances in technology have resulted in the use of sensors in a great variety of applications ranging from weather forecasting, GPS tracking to physical activity measurement. Novel analytic techniques are being developed to study these densely sampled data. My research projects focus on approaches to analyze and model accelerometry data. Accelerometers measure minute-level human movement, and hence provide a rich framework for assessing physical activity patterns of an individual. Using accelerometer data collected in research studies in the School of Medicine at the University of California San Diego, our objectives are (a) to ascertain activity patterns incorporating temporal and subject-to-subject variation (b) to test if these patterns are associated with health outcomes such as obesity, cancer status, biomarkers and quality of life. We apply modern machine learning techniques and develop novel mathematical frameworks to analyze these big data. We anticipate that this work will provide statistical and computational tools to study accelerometry and inform societal guidelines on leading a healthy lifestyle.

Book Description
The report describes the analytic and computational procedures used with the flotation technique of calibrating low-level accelerometers in the laboratory. The system parameters are estimated from the calibration data using the classical least-squares method. The variance of the estimated parameters is a function of the independent variables. An algorithm is described with which the computer can direct the experimenter to take data that will almost minimize the sum of the parameter variances. Three different accelerometers were calibrated on the test facility. This experience gave a very useful evaluation of the hardware, the models, and the computational methods. (Author).

Book Description
Accelerometers are devices that measure acceleration along x-, y- and z-axes. These devices can be worn and used to predict activity intensity. The accuracy of conventional accelerometer analysis methods is sub-optimal but newer, more advanced methods that use raw data from the accelerometer for the prediction of activity intensity have been developed. As responses are correlated sequentially and collected over time, time-series methods can be considered to improve prediction accuracy. Prior responses, however, are not available at the testing stage or in practice. However, in testing, prior predictions can be used as in place of lagging responses on models which were built to use lagging responses as observations. This approach is known as recursive forecasting and applying it to accelerometer data is a unique approach in the literature. In addition, until recently, decision models for accelerometer data did not take into account the ordinality of the responses (for example, sedentary, moderate, and vigorous). This is significant information that we consider in this thesis. In this research, we develop more accurate decision models for predicting activity intensity from accelerometer data by using recursive forecasting. We also consider ordinal statistical models. Measuring activity intensity objectively is a crucial consideration in physiology and exercise science and these methods can be implemented in these disciplines to improve such measurement.

Book Description
The broad use of composite materials and shell structural members with complex geometries in technologies related to various branches of engineering has gained increased attention from scientists and engineers for the development of even more refined approaches and investigation of their mechanical behavior. It is well known that composite materials are able to provide higher values of strength stiffness, and thermal properties, together with conferring reduced weight, which can affect the mechanical behavior of beams, plates, and shells, in terms of static response, vibrations, and buckling loads. At the same time, enhanced structures made of composite materials can feature internal length scales and non-local behaviors, with great sensitivity to different staking sequences, ply orientations, agglomeration of nanoparticles, volume fractions of constituents, and porosity levels, among others. In addition to fiber-reinforced composites and laminates, increased attention has been paid in literature to the study of innovative components such as functionally graded materials (FGMs), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene nanoplatelets, and smart constituents. Some examples of smart applications involve large stroke smart actuators, piezoelectric sensors, shape memory alloys, magnetostrictive and electrostrictive materials, as well as auxetic components and angle-tow laminates. These constituents can be included in the lamination schemes of smart structures to control and monitor the vibrational behavior or the static deflection of several composites. The development of advanced theoretical and computational models for composite materials and structures is a subject of active research and this is explored here for different complex systems, including their static, dynamic, and buckling responses; fracture mechanics at different scales; the adhesion, cohesion, and delamination of materials and interfaces.
