"In the twenty-sixth century, the United Federation of Starworlds is sworn to protect the many planets under its sway at any cost. So when the call for aid is received from Victoria, a world divided between the Federation and its most powerful competitor, the Freeworld States Alliance, Captain Rose Liddell orders the battle cruiser Shenandoah repaired and redirected into space at breakneck speed. But as the Shenandoah reaches the Victoria system, it discovers a situation more explosive than anyone had been prepared to face. Someone is manipulating Federation and Alliance forces alike... someone ready to use hijacking, terrorism, and a starship with advanced militaristic capabilities. And unless they can find out who this unknown opponent is, the two superpowers might find themselves firing the opening missiles in a war neither wants--yet neither can prevent!"--Pg. [4] of cover.

Commanding an Air Force Squadron
Author: Col Usaf Timmons, Timothy
Publisher: Createspace Independent Pub
ISBN: 9781478384410
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 148
Book Description
The privilege of commanding an Air Force squadron, despite its heavy responsibilities and unrelenting challenges, represents for many Air Force officers the high point of their careers. It is service as a squadron commander that accords true command authority for the first time. The authority, used consistently and wisely, provides a foundation for command. As with the officer's commission itself, command authority is granted to those who have earned it, both by performance and a revealed capacity for the demands of total responsibility. But once granted, it much be revalidated every day. So as one assumes squadron command, bringing years of experience and proven record to join with this new authority, one might still need a little practical help to success with the tasks of command. This book offers such help. “Commanding an Air Force Squadron” brings unique and welcome material to a subject other books have addressed. It is rich in practical, useful, down-to-earth advice from officers who have recently experienced squadron command. The author does not quote regulations, parrot doctrine, or paraphrase the abstractions that lace the pages of so many books about leadership. Nor does he puff throughout the manuscript about how he did it. Rather, he presents a digest of practical wisdom based on real-world experience drawn from the reflection of many former commanders from any different types of units. He addresses all Air Force squadron commanders, rated and nonrated, in all sorts of missions worldwide. Please also see a follow up to this book entitled “Commanding an Air Force Squadron in the Twenty-First Century (2003)” by Jeffry F. Smith, Lieutenant Colonel, USAF.

Retread Squadron
Author: John Munn
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 0595194095
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 610
Book Description
RETREAD SQUADRON is about an Air National Guard Squadron that is fat and corrupt when the Korean War breaks out. Captain Marshall Stone, the central character, loves flying almost as much as he loves his beautiful wife, Georgie. Through his perception, we see the squadron reshaping into a fighting unit capable of carrying out the dirty missions that the F-84 pilots are ordered to fly in the war. Hanging over all that happens is the conviction that military decisions are being by politicians who are willing to sacrifice the lives of American fighting men and our country's honor to avoid any confrontation with countries that support our enemy. Captain Stone keeps his perspective as he flies dangerous and predictable missions, while at home his marriage is threatened. He focuses his skills on the missions, achieving some glorious moments by flying all out beyond normal limitations when his comrades need help. He comes through these experiences with a clear view of the priorities that can make his life worth living. The squadron, too, survives and triumphs in the end.

60/337th Fighter Interceptor Squadron
Author: Stan Lukasiewicz
Publisher: Trafford Publishing
ISBN: 1466981008
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 349
Book Description
During a portion of the 20th century known as the Cold War Era, when the United States feared an attack on its land, our armed forces kept a 24-hour vigil to meet any armed aggression against us. A part of this vigil involved the United States Air Force keeping fighter interceptor squadrons on alert at all times, with a certain amount of aircraft poised in alert hangars, fully armed and ready to launch within five-minutes from the sound of the alarm. This history is about one such squadron, the 60th/337th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron assigned to Westover Air Force Base, Chicopee, Massachusetts. Its task was to guard a specific area of airspace in the northeast from an airborne attack. Their object was to destroy any enemy bombers penetrating U.S. airspace that was assigned to the squadron. The Air Force assigned the newest ‘all-weather’ interceptor, the F-86D Sabrejet, to the 60th in May 1953. Sometime in mid-1956 the squadron began receiving a more advanced version of the Sabrejet known as the F-86L. In 1958, the squadron converted to the fastest interceptor in the U.S. arsenal, the F-104 Starfighter, which they flew until the unit was deactivated in July 1960. You will follow the events of this fighter squadron from May 1953 until its last F-104 departed in June 1960. It tells the stories of the unit’s accomplishments, tragedies that befell the squadron, the personal reflections and feelings of some of the members, some eventful sporting news, a few social events that occurred, and the public relations work involved in helping the civilian population in the surrounding communities to better understand the importance of the mission of the fighter squadron, and the significance it had on the civilian population.

Book Description
This book isn't primarily about relationships. There's no romance involved--not even any close friendships. It's mostly about flying machines and their missions. But people are important. After all, pilots fly the machines. There are a lot of characters here that aviation buffs will immediately recognize: Lots of record-setting test pilots, and even some astronauts. Older non-buffs will also see familiar names: an aviation legend, first-ever moon walkers, a couple of popular entertainers, a famous TV-news anchor and even two former presidential candidates. Watch closely, some of them just flash past. Airplanes star in this tale. None of them were perfect, but many of them excelled performing their assigned tasks. North American Aircraft's F-86F was a beautiful machine. But it was also a breathtakingly-good MiG killer. Because of its fine flying qualities, it was fun to fly--a sports car among sedans. Fairchild/Chase Aircraft's C-123B was an outstanding assault transport. It was almost perfect for its mission in Vietnam, but it could be a real handful for any pilot to fly. I have lots of "favorite" airplanes, but Douglas' A-1H Skyraider stands out. There has never been a better attack fighter in terms of accuracy in iron-bomb delivery, weapons load-carrying ability or endurance. Lockheed's F-104A or C models were many pilot's dream machines. Their luster dimmed somewhat for me after I flew them. But they were certainly suitable for training Test Pilot School students to perform zooms and shuttle-aircraft type approaches and landings. I'll stop with these four. There's much more on airplanes inside--about 192,000 words worth. That's a lot to slog through and you may find some parts too technical or too detailed. Ignore them. There are also many numbers, but most aren't important. Browse for good stuff. If you want more info on some airplane, Google her up.
