Child, Please
Author: Ylonda Gault Caviness
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 0698158431
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 322
Book Description
In this wise and funny memoir, Ylonda Gault Caviness describes her journey to the realization that all the parenting advice she was obsessively devouring as a new parent (and sharing with the world as a parenting expert and journalist) didn't mean scratch compared to her mama's old-school wisdom as a strong black woman and mother. With child number one, Caviness set her course: to give her children everything she had. Child number two came along and she patiently persisted. But when her third child arrived, Caviness was so exhausted that she decided to listen to what her mother had been saying all along: Give them everything they want, and there'll be nothing left of you. In Child, Please, Caviness describes the road back to embracing a more sane--not to mention loving--way of raising children. Her mother had it right all along.

Running
Author: Janette Johnson
Publisher: WestBow Press
ISBN: 1490865608
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 45
Book Description
Parents who never held the child they lost often find comfort by retreating to a special place in their imagination. In this place, their own patented version of heaven, they see this child, they kiss the tiny cheek, and they grasp the searching fingers in their own. Although they cannot show this child human love, they pray the angels will and imagine him or her being held closely. They picture their child as healthy, whole, innocent, and beautiful. They see that little personality developing in a warm environment of growth, acceptance, and love. Memory and imagination are wonderful gifts. In her book Running: Ians Story, author Janette Johnsons poetry reflects her trip to her imaginary place. She never had the chance to hold her grandson Connor. Ian, Connors brother, was born with a serious disability. Johnson imagines what it must be like for Connor among the angels, where he runs for Ian, who cant run. Her poetry shares the pain of loss following the death of a child and the joy and sadness that can come with having a child with a disability. Its also the dream of a heaven where brothers are reunited, both healthy and happy. Running: Ians Story shows God understands the grief of those who have lost a child. He realizes that sometimes parents cling to the thread of imagination until the day theyll hold that child perhaps for the first time.

Opal's Journey
Author: Lionel Gambill
Publisher: Author House
ISBN: 1496915410
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 549
Book Description
Refusing to give up their ancestral land and be driven into the newly established reservation, several Nez Perce bands led by Chief Joseph, White Bird, and Looking Glass embarked on a fighting retreat covering four states: Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana, with an attempt to reach safety in Canada. Along the way the native warriors outwitted the U.S. Cavalry again and again, but eventually surrendered some 40 miles from the Canadian border where Chief Joseph made his famous "I will fight no more forever" speech. About 750 men, women, children, and elderly set out on the march; over 100 died in battles and extreme hardship. Based on historical facts mostly the story was told through the eyes of a fictitious nine-year-old white girl, Opal, who befriends the Nez Perce and goes through the war with them. the oppression of the Native Americans was one of the darkest pages in the U.S. history, yet the spirit of these proud people could never be destroyed even in the face of death and exile and material impoverishment. Also the spirit of reconciliation prevailed as the peacemaker Chief Joseph eloquently summed up: Whenever the white man treats the Indians as they treat each other, then we shall have no more wars. We shall be all alike - brothers of one father and one mother, with one sky above us and one country around us, and one government for us all. Then the Great Spirit Chief who rules above will smile upon this land, and send rain to wash out the bloody spots made by brothers' hands upon the face of the earth. for this time Indian race is waiting and praying. I hope that no more groans of wounded men and women will ever go to the ear of the Great Spirit Chief above, and that all people may be one people.
