Book Description
This book is an attempt to present the traditional Scholastic philosophy of man’s nature in a fresh light, from a point of view that may make is more acceptable to the modern scientific mind. This should please the philosopher looking for a new presentation, and the psychologist looking for philosophical orientation. The object is not to dispense with either psychology or philosophy: marriage is never the reduction of one to the other—vive la difference! That the two are compatible is the theme of this book. It is up to the reader to decide whether the result is a happy mating or a mismatch.

Book Description
The New Man shows Thomas Merton at the height of his powers and has as its theme the question of spiritual identity. What must we do to recover possession of our true selves? By way of an answer, Merton discusses how we have become strangers to ourselves by our dependence on outward identity and success, while our real need is for a concern with the image of God in ourselves. At a time of retrieval of our religious traditions, Merton's voice is both intelligent and spiritually compelling. Thomas Merton, a Trappist monk, is perhaps the foremost spiritual thinker of the 20th century. His diaries, social commentary, and spiritual writings continue to be widely read after his untimely death in 1968.

Book Description
Freud is discredited, so we don’t have to think about the darker strains of unconscious motivation anymore. We know what moves our political leaders, so we don’t have to look too closely at their thinking either. In fact, everywhere we look in contemporary culture, knowingness has taken the place of thought. This book is a spirited assault on that deadening trend, especially as it affects our deepest attempts to understand the human psyche—in philosophy and psychoanalysis. It explodes the widespread notion that we already know the problems and proper methods in these fields and so no longer need to ask crucial questions about the structure of human subjectivity.“What is psychology?” Open Minded is not so much an answer to this question as an attempt to understand what is being asked. The inquiry leads Jonathan Lear, a philosopher and psychoanalyst, back to Plato and Aristotle, to Freud and psychoanalysis, and to Wittgenstein. Lear argues that Freud and, more generally, psychoanalysis are the worthy inheritors of the Greek attempt to put our mindedness on display. There are also, he contends, deep affinities running through the works of Freud and Wittgenstein, despite their obvious differences. Both are concerned with how fantasy shapes our self-understanding; both reveal how life’s activities show more than we are able to say.The philosophical tradition has portrayed the mind as more rational than it is, even when trying to account for irrationality. Psychoanalysis shows us the mind as inherently restless, tending to disrupt its own functioning. And empirical psychology, for its part, ignores those aspects of human subjectivity that elude objective description. By triangulating between the Greeks, Freud, and Wittgenstein, Lear helps us recover a sense of what it is to be open-minded in our inquiries into the human soul.

Motorcycle adventure: First true love 'on the road' :LSD trips:Born in 1951,I have the priviledged title of 'Baby Boomer. I came from a large family that lived in the 'burbs. It was in this setting that I became uneasy around people. I found inner peace by being alone. I discovered during a classroom 'bomb drill' or watching films of the atomic bomb or maybe while the older kids were being drafted, that everyone has a dream but very few live to see that dream come true. As a troubled teenager, I decided to live my dream while I was still able. In the spring of 1970, I saddled up a 650 Thunderbolt motorcycle and with four other riders, we split the scene. Staged in the psychedelic era, "Split- The Early Years" chronicles the events of a careless life on the road.

Comics Beyond the Page in Latin America is a cutting-edge study of the expanding worlds of Latin American comics. Despite lack of funding and institutional support, not since the mid-twentieth century have comics in the region been so dynamic, so diverse and so engaged with pressing social and cultural issues. Comics are being used as essential tools in debates about, for example, digital cultures, gender identities and political disenfranchisement.
