Politics and the Constitution in the History of the United States
Author: William W. Crosskey
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 9780226121345
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 722
Book Description
When the first two volumes of William Crosskey's monumental study of the Constitution appeared in 1953, Arthur M. Schlesinger called it "perhaps the most fertile commentary on that document since The Federalist papers." It was highly controversial as well. The work was a comprehensive reassessment of the meaning of the Constitution, based on examination of eighteenth-century usages of key political and legal concepts and terms. Crosskey's basic thesis was that the Founding Fathers truly intended a government with plenary, nationwide powers, and not, as in the received views, a limited federalism. This third volume of Politics and the Constitution, which Crosskey began and William Jeffrey has finished, treats political activity in the period 1776-87, and is in many ways the heart of the work as Crosskey conceived it. In support of the lexicographic analysis of volumes 1 and 2, volume 3 shows that nationalist ideas and sentiments were a powerful force in American public opinion from the Revolution to the eve of the Constitutional Convention. The creation of a generally empowered national government in Philadelphia, it is argued, was the fruition of a long-active political movement, not the unintended or accidental result of a temporary conservative coalition. This view of the political background of the Constitutional Convention directly challenges the Madisonian-Jeffersonian orthodoxy on the subject. In support of his interpretation, Crosskey amassed a wealth of primary source materials, including heretofore unexplored pamphlets and newspapers. This exhaustive research makes this unique work invaluable for scholars of the period, both for the primary sources collected as well as for the provocative interpretation offered.

Old New Kent County [Virginia]
Author: Malcolm H Harris
Publisher: Genealogical Publishing Company
ISBN: 9780806352947
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 1086
Book Description
Dr. Malcolm Harris' two-volume history and genealogy of "Old" New Kent County (the three present-day counties in the aggregate) is one of the great achievements of Virginia local history of the last century. Clearfield Company is honored to have been selected by the Harris family to produce this hardcover edition of "Old New Kent County." Privately published and out of print for many years, this work takes on even greater importance in light of the loss of county records in New Kent and in King & Queen counties and the survival of mere fragments for King William County prior to 1865.

Interpreting Law and Literature
Author: Sanford Levinson
Publisher: Northwestern University Press
ISBN: 9780810107939
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 524
Book Description
From the Preface: "Contemporary theory has usefully analyzed how alternative modes of interpretation produce different meanings, how reading itself is constituted by the variable perspectives of readers, and how these perspectives are in turn defined by prejudices, ideologies, interests, and so forth. Some theorists gave argued persuasively that textual meaning, in literature and in literary interpretation, is structured by repression and forgetting, by what the literary or critical text does not say as much as by what it does. All these claims are directly relevant to legal hermeneutics, and thus it is no surprise that legal theorists have recently been turning to literary theory for potential insight into the interpretation of law. This collection of essays is designed to represent the especially rich interactive that has taken place between legal and literary hermeneutics during the past ten years."

Militia Stand Down: The First Objective Reading of the 2nd Amendment
Author: Geoffrey Smith
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 0995099006
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 552
Book Description
On June 12,1823 Thomas Jefferson quilled the following "History may distort truth, and will distort it for a time, by the superior efforts at justification of those who are conscious of needing it most. Nor will the opening scenes of our present government be seen in their true aspect, until the letters of the day, now held in private hoards, shall be broken up and laid open to public view. What a treasure will be found in General Washington's cabinet, when it shall pass into the hands of as candid a friend to truth as he was himself!" This volume of work is the "public view" he speaks of because ALL interpretations of the 2nd Amendment have exploited history to re-author its meaning. This full story is told with the hoarded letters spanning 84 years and their treasure ultimately revealed by the "Candid a friend of Truth". The 2nd amendment was crafted ahead of its time and its time has finally arrived. It is literally the Holy Grail of Gun Control and the final legacy of the United States Constitution.
