Upwelling areas are among the most fertile regions of the ocean. In principle, upwelling is caused by the divergence of the flow in the surface layer of the ocean which arises as a consequence of a particular wind field, the presence of a coastline, or other special conditions. Since deeper oceanic layers are usually enriched wi th nutrients, it is the permanent supply of nutrients which forms the basis for the high producti vi ty of upwelling reg ions. The study of upwelling and its consequences were, for a long time, the task of individual scientists from all disciplines of marine science. Today, it is perhaps the branch of oceanography where interdisciplinary coopera tion has developed best. Becoming aware of the large potential yield of upwelling regions, governments in creased the funds for upwelling research. With research activities developed on a larger scale, interdisciplin ary cooperation became a necessity. On the international level, several symposia documented the rapid development. Three volumes reflect the results of these scientific meetings (Rapp. Proc.-Verb. 159, 1970; Inv. Pesq. 35, 1, 1971; Tethys §.' 1-2, 1974). The present book contains selected papers from the Third Symposium on Upwelling Ecosystems, which was held in Kiel in September 1975. Although the third of a series of meetings, it was the first where the word "ecosystem" stood in the title for a scientific program.

The ocean covers more than 70% of the Earth’s surface and encompasses 99% of its habitable volume, yet is largely unexplored. However, new technologies, approaches, and a growing recognition of the ocean’s role in sustaining the health, wealth, and security of modern society has spurred a rapid acceleration in ocean exploration and discovery. Past ocean exploration efforts have fundamentally impacted our view of the bounds of life on the planet, the human-ocean relationship, and the Earth’s inner workings, and many more discoveries yet remain. The varied stakeholders for ocean exploration are exemplified in many of the UN Ocean Decade challenges that require generating baseline knowledge to expose ocean regions and processes not yet constrained. As more of the deep ocean is explored, we gain important insight into scientifically and societally relevant questions including the distribution of ocean organisms and ecosystems, seafloor mineralization, chemical cycling, and the role of the oceans in global climate. Ocean exploration benefits from deep integration across disciplinary boundaries and careful coordination between stakeholders and explorers. This volume brings together scientists, engineers, and educators across disciplinary boundaries towards the common goal of mapping and characterizing unknown parts of the ocean. To meet the tremendous challenge of exploring the world's oceans will require the incorporation of new technologies and approaches that enhance the efficiency of exploration, adopt the latest developments in autonomy, and recognize the value of ocean exploration for society’s benefit. This current topic provides an overview of the latest data, results, and innovations along with an assessment of the current gaps in ocean exploration in order to focus the community’s efforts and enhance the spread of current innovations. I have tried to imagine what ancient sailors felt, when “the unknown swirls around and engulfs the mind”, as a forgotten author simply described the brave, perhaps reckless, act of facing such a hostile, menacing and yet fascinating adventure. Innovation has always been the key element, I think, for their success: another way, a better way, a more effective, safer and worthier way was the proper answer to the challenge. The map of our world has been changed time and again, from the geographical as well as the social, economic and scienti?c points of view, by the new discoveries of those sailors. One of the positive qualities of human beings is without doubt the inborn desire to expand their horizons, to see what lies beyond, to learn and understand.
