Book Description
Excerpt from Broken Links and Southern Soldiers: With Miscellaneous Sketches and Poems Fresh roses, red roses. But the echoes dropped dead; And in vain the tides listened - the song's soul had fled. It had sung its bright prophecy, spent its sweet breath. Thou, too, hast thy rose - silent death! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Selections From the Southern Poets Poe did not find his duties as cadet at all pleasant. He was reserved in disposition and made few friends. The routine of military school life became more and more distasteful to him, until at length he deliberately brought about his expulsion by neglect Of such duties as roll call and guard duty. He was twenty-two years of age when, March, 1831, he left West Point. Before leaving the Academy he had secured subscriptions from his fellow-cadets for a volume of his poetry. This, the third volume to be issued, was a revision of his earlier volumes, was entitled Poems, and was dedicated to his fellow-students Of West Point. Book Description
Excerpt from Masterpieces of the Southern Poets Although Lanier has been dead more than thirty years, and no copyright has ever existed in many of his poems, his poetical works were collated by his widow a few years ago, then published by Messrs. Charles Scribner's Sons, from which house she receives a royalty. Therefore, while this volume contains all the greater poems of Poe, as there seems to be no one to claim any royalty on the publication of his works, in which no copyright now exists, Lanier is not so well represented. But I have been sorely tempted to publish in this work by far the greater part of gentle Sidney's superb creations. Book Description
Excerpt from Representative Southern Poets To the scholarly and philosophic mind of Dr. Samuel Johnson we owe the wise saying that "the chief glory of every people arises from its authors." Of course he meant authors whose works represent, and are genuine and direct forces in, the development and conservation of ethical and intellectual virtues in the world; he referred to writers who help civilization in the achievement of whatever is best, truest, and most beautiful that the hand of man can give form to, or the soul can reach and transmute out of the Ideal into the Real. Nothing can be of higher value or worthier of praise and admiration than the power and majesty of thought, vitalized by wisdom from heavenly sources and glowing with the inspiration of genius. Thoughts, finding expression in words arranged in harmonious order, embellished with the graces of language, and permanently embodied in the form of books, are things that do not die. They transmit themselves from age to age, and posterity prizes them as a heritage of inestimable worth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Songs and Poems of the South The Poetry of a country should be a faithful expression of its physical and moral characteristics. The imagery, at least, should be drawn from the indigenous objects of the region, and the sentiments be such as naturally arise under the influence of its climate, its institutions, habits of life, and social condition. Verse, so fashioned and colored, is as much the genuine product and growth of a Land, as its trees or flowers. It partakes of the raciness of the soil, the purity of the atmosphere, the brilliancy of its skies, its mountain pictures, and its broad sweeps of level and undulating territory. The Scenery infuses itself into the Song; and the feelings and fancies are modulated by the circumstances amid which they had their birth. These opinions have formed the poetic Faith of the writer of the present volume. He has not attempted to sing in a mere spirit of imitativeness, or in the tropes and metaphors of foreign Art and Precedent. Gazing upon the delightful Land about him - the Land of his birth and affections - he has endeavored to depict its beauties, - to weave its illustrative objects into the tissues of his imagination, and to give utterance to the thoughts and emotions congenial to a mind impressed by such associations, and loving at once the Patriotic and the Beautiful. For this reason, the writer has felt warranted in styling the contents of the present volume, "Songs and Poems of the South." If they possess any merit, it is in their fidelity to the principles just declared. But the writer is still well aware of their deficiency, even in that respect.
