Book Description
SOMETHING TO PUT SOMETHING ON was completed as a mock-up nearly ten years ago: a book posing serious questions concerning art, generously endowed with its maker's celebrated wordly wit, and intended for young readers. Weiner thus commenced a long search for a place to put what he had made - in this case, a publisher who would embrace a work that expands the scope of children's literature as well as the audience for artist books. All hope was nearly lost until one year ago, the mock-up was brought out and dusted off one final time. We at Steidl were delighted to make a place for this work and to undertake the first printed edition. It is appropriately the foundational book, the very impetus, of our Little Steidl program. Though the ideas Weiner contemplates lead back to youthful days, there is no familiar once upon a time to be found on these pages. Neither story book, nor autobiography, nor reference book, SOMETHING TO PUT SOMETHING ON is a questioning book, both forthright and intriguing. Weiner wields his red, orange, and blue letterforms to take up the question of a human being's relationship to objects and teases the reader into looking at a table in an entirely new light.

Book Description
Beginning in the year of Prince’s birth, 1958, with the recording of Minnesota’s first R&B record by a North Minneapolis band called the Big Ms, Got to Be Something Here traces the rise of that distinctive sound through two generations of political upheaval, rebellion, and artistic passion. Funk and soul become a lens for exploring three decades of Minneapolis and St. Paul history as longtime music journalist Andrea Swensson takes us through the neighborhoods and venues, and the lives and times, that produced the Minneapolis Sound. Visit the Near North neighborhood where soul artist Wee Willie Walker, recording engineer David Hersk, and the Big Ms first put the Minneapolis Sound on record. Across the Mississippi River in the historic Rondo district of St. Paul, the gospel-meets-R&B groups the Exciters and the Amazers take hold of a community that will soon be all but erased by the construction of I-94. From King Solomon’s Mines to the Flame, from The Way in Near North to the First Avenue stage (then known as Sam’s) where Prince would make a triumphant hometown return in 1981, Swensson traces the journeys of black artists who were hard-pressed to find venues and outlets for their music, struggling to cross the color line as they honed their sound. And through it all, there’s the music: blistering, sweltering, relentless funk, soul, and R&B from artists like Maurice McKinnies, Haze, Prophets of Peace, and The Family, who refused to be categorized and whose boundary-shattering approach set the stage for a young Prince Rogers Nelson and his peers Morris Day, André Cymone, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis to launch their careers, and the Minneapolis Sound, into the stratosphere. A visit to Prince’s Paisley Park and a conversation with the artist provide a rare glimpse into his world and an intimate sense of his relationship to his legacy and the music he and his friends crafted in their youth.

Book Description
In 1994, in the newly independent state of Uzbekistan, a party of mostly British tourists was a day excursion from the fabled city of Samarkand when their bus was hijacked by Muslim fundamentalists. Unknown to the hijackers, this particular tourist group contained an ex-SAS sergeant the recently retired Jamie Doherty and the rebellious daughter of the British Foreign Minister, already a favourite of the tabloid press back home. Uncertain how to respond to the terrorists' demands, the Uzbekistan government accepted a British offer of assistance: two members of the SAS crack Counter Revolutionary Warfare Wing were dispatched to Samarkand, with instructions to liase with the local ex-KGB unit commanded by Nurhan Ismatulayeva. AN Uzbek whose grandmother had been a pioneer fighter for women's rights in the 1920s, Nurhan feared that women like herself would swiftly become second-class citizens if an Islamic republic were ever declared. The negotiations dragged on, and in the mountain fortress prison Doherty had to call on all his formidable expertise and ingenuity to keep his fellow hostages alive, and to prepare them for a prospective rescue mission. The only force likely to have any chance of successfully penetrating the fortress and liberating the prisoners was a group led by men of the legendary Special Air Service the SAS!
