Book Description
Excerpt from Somerset Place and Its Restoration Pettigrew State Park, situated on the northeast shore of Lake Phelps in Washington and Tyrrell counties, North Carolina, embraces the dwelling sites of two nineteenth century plantations which were notable for size and for the efficiency of their organization and operation. Both plan tations might be classed as typical of the larger plantations in coas tal North Carolina and in the South generally. By the time the park was established in the late l930's one of these dwelling sites, that of the Pettigrew family, had so far deteriorated that there were no structural remains of the pre-civil War period. The other site, that of the Collins family, retained an impressive propor tion of the early buildings, including an imposing and notable mansion house dating from about 1830. Consequently it offered an attractive possibility for restoring a typical early plantation dwelling area. The North Carolina Department of Conservation and Development, through its Division of State Parks, made the decision to undertake such a restora tion and began to develop plans. Book Description
Excerpt from Bygone Somerset His volume is not a county history nor a county guide; but either directly or in cidentally it covers the history of all the principal places in Somerset. The object of the editor and his coadjutors has been to treat of antiquities and romance, rather than of events which, however important in their way, have no special interest for the general reader. Each chapter is complete in itself, but it will be found that where possible each follows the other in relative sequence. The plan adopted in previous volumes of the Bygone Series has been maintained in this, an effort being made to treat antiquarian subjects without recourse to technicalities, and to bring into as great pro minence as possible the romance associated with localities. At the same time it is hoped that no historic facts in connection with the county and people of Somerset have been wholly overlooked, and that the volume, if it achieves its main object of entertaining the general reader, will also be found not lacking in value to the student. Book Description
Excerpt from The Fall of Somerset, Vol. 1 of 3 The youthful Edward the Sixth had scarcely been three years on the throne he was destined to occupy for so short a period, and his uncle, the Duke of Somerset, was still Protector, and in the plenitude of his power, when insurrections broke out in divers parts of the kingdom; but they were all easily quelled, except one in the west, and another still more formidable rising in the east.
