Excerpt from The Purification of Public Water Supplies This work is in continuation of a series of lectures and papers on the Quality of Public Water Supplies which the author has had the honor to read before several scientific societies and universities during the past five years, and is intended to present in a brief way, (I), the fact and causes of pollution of sources of public water supply; (2), the effect of this pollution on the typhoid fever rates of our larger cities; and (3), to illustrate by a few examples how the typhoid rates have been reduced by the introduction of water from purer natural sources and by filtration of polluted waters. In connection with the subject of water quality, brief reference is made to the water bacteria, and some data are given on the methods of construction and operation of sand filters, together with the cost of filter construction in different water-works, and the cost per million gallons of water treated. The principal object in bringing out this work at the present time is to impress upon city officials, health officers, and others connected with or interested in works of public water supply, the necessity of a more vigorous attack of the problems of "Water Pollution," and "Purification of Water" intended for drinking and other dietetic uses. The statistics of population and typhoid fever death rates (Appendix A) have been obtained from health officers, waterworks managers, and official published reports. With this object in view, I have endeavoured to include in the scope of the book the more recent conclusions which have been arrived at by workers in different branches of the subject, and have as far as possible refrained from details. Whilst it is necessary that the results of a chemical or bacterio logical analysis of a sample of water should be intelligible to a non-professional reader, it need hardly be pointed out that it is impossible for any but those who have been trained in the methods of analysis to arrive at results which are worthy of confidence. Excerpt from Water Purification In the following pages it is intended to treat only of the first division of this subject, since the second covers too broad a field to bring it Within the mom of this volume. Both the kind and the amount of impurities in a polluted water affect the methods which can be employed for its purification, and this is so peculiarly true of sewage that its treatment has become an art in itself. Those waters which are to be purified for drinking purposes demand that a degree Of purity shall be produced which is not possible and usually unnecessary in the case Of sewage. The purification of the latter is, as a rule, quite incomplete as compared with that required for a safe drinking water, and obviously the Object to be attained is quite difl'erent. In the case of waters to be treated for making them suitable for steam-boiler purposes, or for general industrial uses, a slightly different Object is sought. The softening of hard waters or the removal of compounds of iron or manganese may be an integral part of the purification of a public drinking water supply, in which case it is combined with those processes utilized for making a water hygienically safe. Of course it is quite possible to carry on purification for industrial purposes independently of the more refined methods used for drinking water, and frequently this course is pursued in connection with manufacturing plants. Most of the technological developments relevant to water supply and wastewater date back to more than to five thousand years ago.
