Book Description
Excerpt from Some Principles of Fiction Any general examination of the novelist's art must appear arid and theoretical. It cannot fail to be directed towards the more formal elements in that art, while criticism of individual novelists can deal more adequately with the life they are trying to create. A book of this sort is doomed to appear excessively schematic, and some people may object that profitable things can be said about this or that novel, but hardly about the Novel; for as Lawrence said: 'all rules of construction hold good only for novels that are copies of other novels'. That a great many things cannot be said in a book of this sort must be obvious to anyone who has ever given any thought to the novel. One can isolate for the purpose of analysis such an element as Plot, for instance but in many novels that do not lack unity, the principle of cohesion is something we cannot call Plot, something to which we cannot do justice except in individual studies of these books or of their authors. But though much must be left unsaid, something' can be said and a generalization may be useful even if it does not cover every instance. One of the purposes of such an examina tion is to help writers; and it is very difficult indeed to help writers except over formal problems. The only useful help many writers have ever given or received has been over small points such as punctuation, or the phrasing of a sentence. The present book deals with other aspects of the novel than those dealt with in my former treatise. It aspires only to an internal consistency. It is not a correction or a defence or amust sometimes mention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Principles of Criticism: An Introduction to the Study of Literature The purpose of this book is to present an account of the main principles of literary criticism, and to illustrate these principles by passages from great writers. The book will, therefore, be found to contain (in addition to the text) a collection of noteworthy critical utterances. The translations from the Greek, Germany and French have been done by the Author. References are made (with two exceptions) to the text of Aristotle by the pages of Immanuel Bekker's large (Berlin) edition; and to that of Plato, by the pages of the edition of Henry Stephens. Addison is cited by numbers of the Spectator, and Lessing by chapters of the Laocoon. In the case of other authors, the footnotes will sufficiently indicate the sources of reference. Both an index of authors and an index of subjects have been provided. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Art of Fiction These are the three propositions which I have to discuss. It follows as a corollary and evident deduc tion that, these propositions once admitted, those who follow and profess the Art of Fiction must be recognized as artists, in the strictest sense of the word, just as much as those who have delighted and elevated mankind by music and painting; and that the great Masters of Fiction must be placed on the same level as the great Masters in the other Arts. In other words, I mean that where the highest point, or what seems the highest point, possible in this Art is touched, the man who has reached it is one of the world's greatest men. I cannot suppose that there are any in this room who would refuse to admit these propositions; on the contrary, they will seem to most here self-evident yet the application of theory to practice, of principle to persons, may be more difficult. For instance, so boundless is the admiration for great Masters such as Raphael or Mozart, that if one were to propose that Thackeray should be placed beside them, on the same level, and as an equal, there would be felt by most a certain shock. I am not suggesting that the art of Thackeray is to be compared with that of Raphael, or that there is any similarity in the work of the two men I only say that, Fiction being one Art, and Painting another and a sister Art. Book Description
Excerpt from The Contemporary Short Story: A Practical Manual A distinguished British critic, Professor Hugh Walker, remarks: There is no other form Of literature in which America is so eminent as in the writing of short stories. This dictum alone is sufficient justification for introducing a course in this subject into every college in the land. Not only is a better understanding and appreciation Of the finest short stories fostered by such a course, but not a few students find themselves able to write tales that are accepted by reputable American periodicals if not during their undergraduate years, at any rate Shortly afterward. Writing fiction for the magazines is both an art and a business. This volume accordingly aims to teach promis ing young authors, whether in or out Of college, how to write stories that shall be marketable as well as artistic. It attempts to state succinctly, and as clearly as may be, some fundamental principles of short-story writing. These principles are based upon somewhat extensive reading of short fiction in English, both classic and contemporary; Of a pretty large number of manuscripts submitted to important periodicals; and of most of the critical works on the short story. Many of the pages are written from the editorial standpoint. I have not attempted to set up an impracticable ideal on the one hand, nor to concede too much to the lower range of popular taste on the other. Book Description
Excerpt from The Creative Art of Fiction With fiction it is far otherwise. The writer of a novel may sin against every law of narrative art without fear that his error will be mentioned in the critical reviews. Not one of the criticisms, in this country, of a recent work of fiction, Helbeek of Bannisdale, defined the author' s purpose and general plan of development; yet the closing scene, the death of the heroine by drowning, cannot be justified without reference to the motif of the story. There is in print no satisfactory treatment of fiction as an art; scholarship and critical opinion on the subject are inchoate; even among institutions of learning wherein courses of instruction on this topic are given, there is little agreement. In some, no better device has been hit upon than the application of accepted theories of dramatic structure to the study of the novel; in others, the history of fiction forms the subject-matter of study, and, incidentally, some attention is given to characteristics and schools. Book Description
This concise and highly accessible textbook outlines the principles and techniques of storytelling. It is intended as a high-school and college-level introduction to the central concepts of narrative theory – concepts that will aid students in developing their competence not only in analysing and interpreting short stories and novels, but also in writing them. This textbook prioritises clarity over intricacy of theory, equipping its readers with the necessary tools to embark on further study of literature, literary theory and creative writing. Building on a ‘semiotic model of narrative,’ it is structured around the key elements of narratological theory, with chapters on plot, setting, characterisation, and narration, as well as on language and theme – elements which are underrepresented in existing textbooks on narrative theory. The chapter on language constitutes essential reading for those students unfamiliar with rhetoric, while the chapter on theme draws together significant perspectives from contemporary critical theory (including feminism and postcolonialism). This textbook is engaging and easily navigable, with key concepts highlighted and clearly explained, both in the text and in a full glossary located at the end of the book. Throughout the textbook the reader is aided by diagrams, images, quotes from prominent theorists, and instructive examples from classical and popular short stories and novels (such as Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Franz Kafka’s ‘The Metamorphosis,’ J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter, or Dostoyevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov, amongst many others). Prose Fiction: An Introduction to the Semiotics of Narrative can either be incorporated as the main textbook into a wider syllabus on narrative theory and creative writing, or it can be used as a supplementary reference book for readers interested in narrative fiction. The textbook is a must-read for beginning students of narratology, especially those with no or limited prior experience in this area. It is of especial relevance to English and Humanities major students in Asia, for whom it was conceived and written.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Philosophy of the Short-Story Has been paid to the history of fiction and to the principles of narrative art. In many of the leading American uni versities the modern novel has been serving as the subject for lectures and as the material for private study, in the course of which the Short-story received afair share of consideration. No doubt, it is in consequence of this incessant discussion of modern fiction and of its methods that the author and the pub lishers have been made aware of a de mand for the present essay, with such revision and annotation as might render it more useful, not only to the earnest student, but also to the casual reader.
