Book Description
Excerpt from Account of Some Early Proposals for Steam Navigation Jonathan hulls, in 1736, took out a patent for carrying vessels and ships out of and into any harbour, port, or river, against wind and tide, or in a calm. In the following year he published a description of his method, which consisted in towing thembyasteamboat. Thecopiesoftheori ginaleditionofthistractareveryscarce;bntit was reprinted at the end of Mr. Partington's Lec tures on the Steam Engine and well de served to be recalled to pnblicnotice. Thedraw boat was to be furnished with a pair ofwheels, to the axis ofwhicharmswere attachedwith flat boards(which hecallsfans) at their extremities; and great ingenuity is said, upon very good authority, to be displayed in the contrivance, not only of the method by which a circular action was produced, but of that by Which the motion of the engine was regulated. Book Description
Excerpt from Notes for a History of Steam Navigation The little publication in which Hulls attempted to make his scheme known to the world was printed in London in 1737. It is entitled A Description and Draught of a new-invented Machine for carrying Ves sale or Ships out of or into any Harbour, Port, or River against Wind and Tide or in a Calm. In his preface he says, There is one great hardship lies too commonly upon those who propose to advance some new though useful scheme for the public benefit. The world abou cd ing more in rash censure than in a candid and unprejudiced estimation of things, if a person does not answer their expectations in every point, instead of friendly treatment for his good in tentions, he too often meets with ridicule and contempt. But I hope this will not be my case, but that they will form a judgment of my present undertaking only from trial. If it should be said that I have filled this tract with things that foreign to the matter proposed, I answer: There is nothing in it but what is necessary to be understood by those who desire to know the nature of that machine which I now offer to the world, and I hope that, through the blessing of God, it may prove serviceable to my country. Book Description
Excerpt from History of American Steam Navigation After passing through many years with wooden-hull vessels, whose form, either for ocean or river service, could not be excelled by any nation of shipbuilders, we came in about 1870 to the period of a radical change from wooden to iron hulls - not but that many iron-hull vessels had been built in the United States prior to this date - but a more general adoption of iron for the purpose, and the substitution of the screw propeller for the side wheel, with the adoption of the compound engine for the simple engine in screw vessels. About fifteen years ago steel hulls and triple-expansion engines were introduced. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
