Book Description
The ignition of condensed substances is a recent scientific trend in combustion and explosion physics. Its principal results have been obtained largely by using computers and modern experimental techniques. In this book the authors present a comprehensive theoretical examination of various ignition models and the elaboration of experimental approaches for their description. The first three chapters were originally published in 1984 in Russian (V.N. Vilyunov, Ignition Theory of Condensed Substance, Nauka, Novosibirsk). For this English edition they have been revised and supplemented by new material. Two completely new chapters have also been added: one devoted to experimental studies and the other to local ignition problems. The book is the result of several years of active experience in the field of ignition. It will be of particular interest to research workers in chemical physics and to engineers dealing with the problems of fire-explosion accident prevention.

Book Description
Computer solutions are obtained for several ignition models involving either surface or gaseous exothermic chemistry. Surface regression and convection of products from the surface are found to be limiting for the surface reaction of gaseous oxidizer and solid fuel. Fast gas phase reactions cannot in general be distinguished from surface and solid phase reactions by the experimental determination of the dependence of ignition time on igniting flux; a more usable technique may be the effect of concentration on ignition regimes. Slow gas phase reactions would be best studied by photographic observation of the developing gaseous reaction zone. Further analyses, coupled with judiciously chosen numerical solutions, offer a reasonable path to the solution of the remaining unresolved questions. (Author).

Book Description
This book focuses on the application of classical combustion theory to ignition and flame propagation in solid-solid and gas-solid systems. It presents experimental investigations in the areas of local ignition, filtration combustion, self-propagating high temperature synthesis and nanopowders protection. The authors highlight analytical formulas used in different areas of combustion in solids and propose an approach based on classical combustion theory. The book attempts to analyze the basic approaches to understanding of solid-solid and solid - gas combustion presented in contemporary literature in a unified approach based on classical combustion theory.

Book Description
An overall picture of the ignition and deflagration mechanisms of nitrocellulose based propellants is presented. It is shown that the propellant behaves as an inert solid during the pre-ignition heating stage. The solid phase reaction becomes important during the steady state deflagration at low pressures, especially in single-base propellants because of its slow gas phase reactions. Both during the ignition and deflagration process the heat transported from the gas phase reaction zones to the solid surface sustains the decomposition of the solid phase. The mode of heat transfer between the gas phase zones and the solid phase reactions are discussed, including the contribution of the thermo-mechanical effects. A number of speculative deductions are made which may be investigated in the future. (Author).

Book Description
A hands-on, integrated approach to solving combustion problems in diverse areas An understanding of turbulence, combustion, and multiphase reacting flows is essential for engineers and scientists in many industries, including power genera-tion, jet and rocket propulsion, pollution control, fire prevention and safety, and material processing. This book offers a highly practical discussion of burning behavior and chemical processes occurring in diverse materials, arming readers with the tools they need to solve the most complex combustion problems facing the scientific community today. The second of a two-volume work, Applications of Turbulent and Multiphase Combustion expands on topics involving laminar flames from Professor Kuo's bestselling book Principles of Combustion, Second Edition, then builds upon the theory discussed in the companion volume Fundamentals of Turbulent and Multiphase Combustion to address in detail cutting-edge experimental techniques and applications not covered anywhere else. Special features of this book include: Coverage of advanced applications such as solid propellants, burning behavior, and chemical boundary layer flows A multiphase systems approach discussing basic concepts before moving to higher-level applications A large number of practical examples gleaned from the authors' experience along with problems and a solutions manual Engineers and researchers in chemical and mechanical engineering and materials science will find Applications of Turbulent and Multiphase Combustion an indispensable guide for upgrading their skills and keeping up with this rapidly evolving area. It is also an excellent resource for students and professionals in mechanical, chemical, and aerospace engineering.
