Book Description
Paper 1: Describes the engineering soil survey and the research techniques and methods which were applied in the preparation of the engineering oil maps. Paper 2: Covers a statistical method of correlation used in a pilot study conducted in order to make engineering soils data available from a pedological map of Fayette County, KY. Paper 3: Aerial photographs have been used in Maine in the following types of highway location studies: preliminary cost estimates for portions of the interstate system, detailed study of proposed route locations, and relocation studies for secondary roads. Paper 4: Geology, aerial photographic interpretation, and geophysics are described as a research unit for the reconnaissance and exploration of sand and gravel deposits situated in an economically important location to the interstate highway system in North Dakota.

Book Description
This paper reports the methods and procedures employed by the Joint Highway Research Project at Purdue University in making preliminary engineering soil surveys from aerial photographs for the State Highway Commission of Indiana. Soil parent material areas are differentiated and mapped from air photos on the basis of changes in land form, drainage pattern, gully shapes, photographic gray tones, and vegetation. Typical soil profiles are used to give a three-dimensional picture of soil areas. Mapping units imply topography, parent material and texture of soil areas.
