Assessments of soft-shell clam (Mya arenaria) stocks were carriedout in three closed shellfish-growing areas in the CharlotteCounty, New Brunswick, area of the Scotia-Fundy Region. In 1983standing stocks of pre-recruits (30-41mm in shell lenght) rangedfrom 34.0-89 bu/ha. Standing stock of recruits (43+ mm in shelllenght) ranged from 30.3-173.0 bu/ha. Isopleths of clam densityare presented for each study area and indicate little spatialoverlap in the distribution of clams within different recruitmentcategories.

In 1984 a soft-shell clam (Mya arenaria) resource inventory inBuckmans Creek, Charlotte County, New Brunswick revealed astanding stock of 2,036 bu (55,576 kg) of market-sized (shelllength 38 mm or more) clams and 50 bu (1,358 kg) of pre-recruits(32 to 37 mm shell length). Growth rate analysis showed thatthis population is slow growing compared to other Maritimepopulations. Inspection of size frequency distributions indicatea recruitment failure approximately 4-5 yr prior to the survey. A recommendation is made to harvest and depurate the market-sized clams.

In 1983,standing stocks of pre-recruits (43-50mm shell length) in closedareas ranged from 4.8-12.9 bu/ha. In the open area, the standingstock of pre-recruits was 4.1 bu/ha. Standing stock of recruits(51 mm+ shell length) in the closed areas ranged from ll.4-31.2bu/ha and in the open area 15.0 bu/ha. Growth rate analysisindicated that soft-shell clams reach market size of 51 mm inlength in approximately 7.5 year. Isopleths of clam density arepresented for each study area and indicate little spatial overlapin the distribution of clams within different recruitmentcategories.
