Book Description
Description: There may have been many attempts in the past to present an account of the political conditions in India from A.D. 600 to A.D. 1000. But history as a mere chronicle of political events of dynastic successions and wars is no longer considered adequate. It must take into account the common man, his social problems and environments, economic factors, intellectual activities, religious beliefs and prejudices, and many other aspects of his everyday cultural life. The statement is all the more true in the case of the history of India's distant past, when Dharma dominated almost every sphere of life, including political. The recent archaeological and anthropological discoveries have further opened many new avenues leading to a more satisfactory reconstruction of India's cultural history than hitherto. In the present book, the reader will find an exhaustive and critical account of north Indian society during the four centuries of the post-Gupta period of Indian History, based on a vast range of sources-literary, epigraphic, sculptural, architectural, foreign accounts, etc. It is an established fact of History that the destiny of a society is moulded by the nature of internal and external challenges it has to meet in view, the author has tried to show in this work how under the prevailing political pressures and other factors, the rival forces, one restorative and the other dynamic in their attitude to social problems, were operating simultaneously throughout this period to influence the life of the people as a whole. The book which has a foreword by Prof. A.L. Basham, should prove a fascinating and useful study for the advanced scholars as well as students of Ancient Indian History and Culture.

Book Description
Some Aspects Of Early Indian Society is a comprehensive study of certain social institutions of early India based on literary and epigraphic traditions, located between Vedic times to the 8th century A.D. It poses new questions on ticklish issues like the social thought of Kautilya, Hindu sacraments, graded early Indian society, the question of the Sudras, subjection of women, Buddhist attitudes towards women, Ashoka Dharma as gleaned from rock edicts, feudal relationship and obligations between kings and vassal. This study of Kautilya's social thought is probably the first of its kind to discover the essentials of Hindu social thought and its systematic presentation. Some Aspects Of Early Indian Society is an attempt to trace the origin and growth of various Hindu sacraments in early Indian society.

Book Description
This book examines women and society in India during 600–1200 CE through epigraphs. It offers an analysis of inscriptional data at the pan-India level to explore key themes, including early marriage, deprivation of girls from education, property rights, widowhood and satī, as well as women in administration and positions of power. The volume also traces gender roles and agency across religions such as Hinduism and Jainism, the major religions of the times, and sheds light on a range of political, social, economic and religious dimensions. A panoramic critique of contradictions and conformity between inscriptional and literary sources, including pieces of archaeological evidence against traditional views on patriarchal stereotypes, as also regional parities and disparities, the book presents an original understanding of women’s status in early medieval South Asian society. Rich in archival material, this book will be useful to scholars and researchers of ancient and medieval Indian history, social history, archaeology, epigraphy, sociology, cultural studies, gender studies and South Asian studies.

Book Description
