The study attempts to explain changes in reproductive behaviour of rural women of Bangladesh that has occurred at a time when the country was predominantly poor and agricultural. Three different areas were studied, using time series analysis, and changes measured by demand for additional children and current contraceptive use. The findings show that demand for no additional children was generated prior to the fertility decline and that the family planning programme helped to mitigate the demand for fertility control modifying supply logistics since the late 1970s. Reproductive behaviour of women is strongly affected by biosocial and cultural factors related to patriarchal social structure. Desired family size in all three areas were similar prior to the fertility decline of the 1980s. It was lower than the fertility rate and is probably affected by prior improved survivorship. During the period studied, desired family size reduced equally in all three areas. With this same level of desired family size, an efficient Matlab Family planning programme successfully reduced fertility from the mid 1970s, while high fertility in the other two areas began to decline from the 1980s.

The study of communication is elemental to the social sciences but fraught with difficulty. In this book a method that merges statistical modeling along with communication and social network analysis is developed and applied to the complex arena of behavior change. The methodology is used to study changes in the fertility behaviour of women in rural Bangladesh. The total fertility rate fell by 48% from 6.3 in 1975 to 3.1 in 2000. This could not be explained by the notions of economic development instead the answer was sought into an ideational shift formed by communication demonstrating the benefits of smaller family. Data were gathered using structured interviews of village women and the application of the methodology proved that fertility behaviour in rural Bangladesh is a manifestation of ideational change to a small family norm, promoted via an all- out communication campaign using both mass media and interpersonal mechanisms.This involved the use of three interrelated concepts - ideational change, social interaction and social networks. The book will be of interest to those in social sciences, community health and economic development.

Reproductive tract infections (RTis) have become a silent epidemic that is devastating women's lives. Each year, thousands of women die needlessly from the consequences of these infections, including cervical cancer, ectopic pregnancy, acute and chronic infections of the uterus and the fallopian tubes, and puerperal infections. For many women, this happens because they receive medical attention too late, if at all. The terrible irony of this tragedy is that early diagnosis of and treatment for many RTis do not require high-technology health care. For the hundreds of millions of women with chronic RTis acquired from their sexual partners, life can become a living hell. Infection is a major cause of infertility, and it leads to scorn and rejection in many countries. These women may experience constant pain, have festering lesions of the genital tract, be at enhanced risk of second ary diseases, and endure social ostracism. The problems associated with RT!s have grown even greater in the past decade with the emergence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and AIDS. Preexisting sexually transmitted disease, particularly when associated with genital tract ulcers, raises women's vulnerability to the transmission of HIV 3-5 fold.
