Book Description
PEN/FAULKNER AWARD FINALIST • From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Martin Dressler: the essential stories across three decades that showcase his indomitable imagination. • "A book of astonishingly beautiful and moving stories by one of America’s finest and most original writers.” —Charles Simic, The New York Review of Books Steven Millhauser’s fiction has consistently, and to dazzling effect, dissolved the boundaries between reality and fantasy, waking life and dreams, the past and the future, darkness and light, love and lust. The stories gathered here unfurl in settings as disparate as nineteenth-century Vienna, a contemporary Connecticut town, the corridors of a monstrous museum, and Thomas Edison’s laboratory, and they are inhabited by a wide-ranging cast of characters, including a knife thrower and teenage boys, ghosts and a cartoon cat and mouse. But all of the stories are united in their unfailing power to surprise and enchant. From the earliest to the stunning, previously unpublished novella-length title story—in which a man who is dead, but not quite gone, reaches out to two lonely women—Millhauser in this magnificent collection carves out ever more deeply his wondrous place in the American literary canon.

Gloria Manson returns home from London to find her mother has become a penitent recluse. While working in the village pub and flirting with old school mates Gloria tries to bring her mother back into reality. Some friends from London come down to the village and help Gloria with her mother and cause her to restart her London career in a new location. Most of the action takes place in Fotheringham Manor Estate where school friends Gary and Freddie work. This Estate is the home of the Lord family where son Daniel is the resident manager. Hikers trespass through the Estate causing damage and upsets to both Daniel and his forester girl friend Katya. These hikers and the new Education Centre on the Estate mean there are more people in the forest and this constrains some of Gloria's plans. Daniel's sister, Samantha is a partner in Heritage Adventures, a company who helps tourists find their pasts, and she in turn upsets some of Gloria's activities. Over time the various parties clash through misunderstandings, jealousy, confessions, and fights and ultimately murder.

"Intense, riotous, funny, sexy and thrilling . . . Renberg is a great writer" MATT HAIG "An exceptional novel . . . majestic page-turner" KARL OVE KNAUSGAARD Pal has a shameful secret that has dragged him into huge debt, much more than he can ever hope to pay back on his modest salary as a civil servant. He's desperate that nobody finds out especially not his teenage daughters or his ex-wife. It's time to get creative. Sixteen-year-old Sandra also has a secret. She's in love with the impossibly charming delinquent Daniel William, a love so strong and pure that nothing can get in its way. Not her concerned parents, not Jesus, and certainly not some other girl. Cecilie has the biggest secret of them all, a baby growing inside her. She can only hope that her boyfriend Rudi is the child's father. But although she loves him intensely, she feels trapped in their small-time criminal existence, and dreams of an escape from it all. Over three fateful September days, these lives cross in a whirlwind of brutality, laughter, tragedy and love that will change them forever. A fast-paced, moving and darkly funny page-turner about people who are trying to fill the holes in their lives, See You Tomorrow combines horror and hope, heavy metal music and literary marvels to become a startlingly original, eerie and hilarious novel about friendship, crime, loneliness and tragic death. It was supposed to be some time away, to relax and reflect. To figure out what she wanted. But what she never expected was to see the stunning, young Rachelle stumble through the door. The beautiful brunette stole Vicky's breath away, and she found herself immediately transfixed by the bubbly youth. Vicky had always known she could be attracted to women... but this was something else. Her attraction to Rachelle was so strong it left her a confused mess. What was happening to her? And why now? As she gets to know Rachelle better, Vicky comes to the startling realization that she might just be falling in love... * Feel of Her After surviving a near-fatal car crash, recovering Christina doesn’t know if she can handle returning back to normal life. She has life-long injuries and scarring, daily reminders of the night she nearly lost her life. And daily reminders of how damaged she is now… nobody could possibly want her. Her long-term boyfriend already dumped her. But Christina finds support where she didn’t know she would: Her friend Sandra. The woman is gentle and supportive, and Christina starts to think about Sandra in a different way. She daydreams about the tall woman’s toned, beautiful legs, about that pretty smile, and those full lips. As time passes, and Christina and Sandra spend more time together, Christina realizes she’s falling… hard. How could she be falling in love with another woman? Why was she changing now? And would Sandra feel the same way? * Smell of Her I knew it was a mistake… to tell her. To tell her I loved her. We were just friends with benefits. She didn’t have those feelings for me. To her, beautiful, stunning, sexy Alicia, we were just fooling around. But I told her anyway. I don’t know why I did. I knew I’d get hurt. I knew she couldn’t possibly be in love with me, too. There are two rules: Never fall for a straight girl, and never fall for your friend. I’d broken rule number two. Serves me right. I walked out of her room biting back the tears, thinking how foolish I was. Until I heard her call my name. And then something amazing happened… She told me she loved me, too.

Book Description
Slut Narratives in Popular Culture explores representations of slut shaming and the term “slut” in U.S. popular media, 2000–2020. It argues that cultural narratives of intersectional gender identities are gradually but unevenly shifting to become more progressive and sex positive. Moving beyond prior research on slut shaming, which exposes problematic conflations between women’s morality and a sexual purity associated with White economic privilege, this book examines how narratives that perpetuate slut shaming are both contested and reinscribed through stories we circulate. It emphasizes effects of twenty-first century developments in digital communication and entertainment. The rapid evolution of genres combined with increased access to the consumption and production of texts stimulates more diverse storytelling. The book’s analyses demonstrate twenty-first-century changes in how slut shaming is depicted and understood while encouraging consumers and producers of pop culture to attend to cultural narratives as they reify or challenge the subordination of vulnerable populations. Aimed primarily at an academic audience, this book will also engage general readers interested in intersectional feminism, pop culture, new media, digital technologies, and sociolinguistic change. Readers will become more adept at deconstructing assumptions embedded in popular media, especially narratives informing slut shaming.
