Book Description
At present, the intensification of global climate and environmental change has led to frequent occurrence of natural hazards. Various types of natural hazards always overlap and interact, or occur in a chain reaction, with a wide range of impacts and a long period of time, resulting in serious disaster losses. Typically, major earthquakes and geological hazards, extreme meteorological hazards, large-scale floods and droughts, marine disasters, and forest and grassland fires, as well as their compound and chained hazards are among the key factors affecting human life safety and world economic development. To better our understanding of disaster prevention, mitigation, and relief, it is thus pivotal to facilitate advanced perception, intelligent early warning, accurate prevention, and efficient rescue of natural hazards. This Research Topic aims to collect both Original Research and Review articles addressing the state-of-the-art advances of theories and methodologies in all types of natural hazards. Studies underlining the compound and chained relationship between different hazards are in particular welcomed. Potential themes include, but are not limited to: • Mechanisms of formation, evolution, and disaster process of multiple natural hazards as well as their compound and chained natural hazards • Model and scenario development regarding whole process control, chain breaking of key nodes, and precise prevention of major natural hazard chains • Methods and applications on detection, identification, database establishment, and spatiotemporal evolution law analysis of natural hazard sources • Technologies on intelligent early warning and refined risk assessment of compound and chained natural hazards. • Rescue equipment and investigation of post-disaster community reconstruction

Book Description
A fascinating look at one of the greatest conservation success stories of the modern era: the wildly popular, unique, and thrilling raptor, the Osprey. Ospreys are one of the few bird species that are found throughout the world. From forests in Hokkaido to rivers in Oregon and islands off Australia, Ospreys steal the show as nature lovers easily watch them build their massive nests and tend to their young. The fact that the Osprey is one of the few large birds that can hover adds to its mystique, and to watch it plunge into the water, emerging with a fish clutched in its talons, is truly a sight one will remember. As widespread as Ospreys are, not long ago they were under threat of extinction. During the 1950s and '60s, scientists tied the decline of Osprey populations to the heavy use of DDT and other human pollutants. In the 1980s, Ospreys began a slow recovery due to the efforts of conservationists and through the resilience of the adaptable raptors themselves. Today they are again considered common in most parts of the world, although some populations remain threatened. In this gorgeously illustrated book, Alan F. Poole, one of America's premier Osprey experts, has written a lyrical exposé of these majestic creatures, describing their daily habits and exploring their relationship with the environment. Ospreys celebrates the species' miraculous recovery from contaminants and hunters, chronicles their spectacular long-distance migrations, and unveils their vital role in bringing life to coastal habitats. Few other birds have such a hold on the human imagination. This book shows us why.

Book Description
A lively account of a controversial technology developed to mitigate earthquake risk and change how we live with threatening environments. The Sistema de Alerta Sísmica Mexicano is the world’s oldest public earthquake early warning system. Given the unpredictability of earthquakes, the technology was designed to give the people of Mexico City more than a minute to prepare before the next big quake hits. How does this kind of environmental monitoring technology get built in the first place? How does its life-saving promise align with reality? And who shapes modern risk mitigation? In ¡Alerta!, Elizabeth Reddy surveys this innovation to shed light on what it means to imagine a world where sirens could sound out an ¡alerta sísmica! at any moment—and what it would be like to live in such a world. Proponents of earthquake early warnings have long held that the technology can save lives and limit economic losses. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and archival data, Reddy conducts a thorough, qualitative analysis of these claims and considers the requirements and uses of the alert system. She embeds her study in a rich narrative of the engineers who designed the system in conjunction with contingent political and environmental conditions. The result demonstrates how addressing earthquake dangers is no small task: it means trying to change relationships between the environment, society, and technology. Doing so, she critiques universalist and techno-centric approaches to hazard risk mitigation and celebrates the potential of contextually appropriate and broadly supported efforts. ¡Alerta! takes readers on a vivid journey into the world of Mexican earthquake risk mitigation, with critical insights for anthropologists and science and technology studies scholars, as well as specialists in the geosciences, engineering, and emergency management.
