Book Description
Experiment have been conducted to measure the local surface-shear stress and the average skin-friction coefficient in incompressible flow for a turbulent boundary layer on a smooth flat plate having zero pressure gradient. Data were obtained for a range of Reynolds numbers from 1 million to 45 million. The local surface-shear stress was measured by a floating-element skin-friction balance and also by a calibrated total head tube located on the surface of the test wall. The average skin-friction coefficient was obtained from boundary-layer velocity profiles.

Book Description
The development of a skin-friction balance to be used in a wind tunnel with heat-transfer conditions is described. The balance is a null-type device with a floating head element whose temperature can be maintained between 100K and 345K. This is accomplished with a cooled or heated jacket that is placed in direct contact with the friction element. At the desired element temperature the jacket is separated from the element and the shear-force data is taken. The balance was used in a Mach 5 supersonic flow with moderate heat-transfer rates. Shear forces ranging from 0.05 gm/sq cm to 1 gm/sq cm have been measured and higher ranges can be obtained by simply changing a coil spring. (Author).

Book Description
The effects of the injection of a light, medium, and heavy gas on the skin friction and heat transfer characteristics of the laminar boundary layer flow over a flat plate were investigated. This was done by a numerical solution of the governing differential equations for injection rate parameters of -0, -0. 1, -0.2; Mach numers from 0 to 3; and wall-to-stream temperature ratios of 0.25, 0.50, and 1.00. The results show that the selection of discrete injection systems must represent a favorable compromise between conflicting factors (such as small molecular weight and large molecular diameters) which influence the amount of reduction in skin friction and heat transfer desired.
