Book Description
The ability to bring meaning to music notation without the assistance of an accompanist playing choral parts is a requisite skill on a musician’s journey to self-reliance and full artistic expression. Despite its importance, high performance expectations pose a challenge for choir directors to allocate discrete rehearsal time to music reading skill development. Consider for a moment an embedded music reading system that facilitates choristers’ ability to read their choral octavos; a process that develops rhythm and tonal musicianship and gives choristers the tools they need to learn music on their own. This bookintroduces an adaptable, literature-based choral music reading approach that empowers young singers with music literacy skills that point beyond the choral rehearsal and encourage independent and group music making for a lifetime.

Book Description
Conductors agree that each choral ensemble has a unique "personality," that is, an energy and atmosphere in the rehearsal room, which affects greatly the rehearsal process, and methodology used. This is especially true in gender-specific choirs. Gender-specific choirs have long been an important building block in any choral curriculum. Working with gender-specific choirs, while often a challenge for teachers, offers a unique opportunity to explore pedagogy and allows the teacher to develop a variety of teaching styles and techniques best suited for each type of ensemble. How the public-school music educator approaches these gender-specific choirs, chooses repertoire, creates team building activities, and fosters relationships between these students, can make a significant difference in the musical and personal development of the students. As such, this study will venture beyond study of specific rehearsal pedagogy into the areas of nurturing and development of student attitudes. By far the majority of choral resources dedicated to rehearsal technique are focused toward a mixed choir ensemble, that is, SATB. Given compelling anecdotal evidence that indeed rehearsal pedagogy varies distinctly between mixed and gender-specific ensembles, this study will add much needed research and methodology in the area of teaching for gender-specific choirs in public schools. To be fair, there are numerous writings which focus on various types of choirs in private youth choral organizations. Given that private organizations tend to reflect a different demographic than public schools, the challenges of teaching in that situation are quite different for numerous reasons. Therefore, I decided to focus this study on public-school settings. This study will focus on four master teachers who excel in teaching both mixed and gender-specific choirs. Through interview and video observation of the teacher, (and choir in the case of rehearsal footage), I will compile lists of teaching methodology, music skills acquisition, and interpersonal development. More importantly, I will define foundational pillars that clearly earmark differences between the ensemble that can lead to the development of future resources.

Book Description
In developing young musicians in K-12 education, there is a disconnect between instrumental musicians and their choral counterparts in the strategies taught in the classroom when learning to perform music. When receiving classroom instruction choral ensembles focus on aural skill development, often at the cost of reading skills acquisition. In contrast, instrumental music ensembles nourish a student's reading capabilities, sometimes causing gaps in aural skills. The solution for creating the most well-rounded musicians is visiting the differences between the typical instructional strategies used for choral and instrumental ensembles in order to find the strengths and weaknesses and cross-pollinating the most robust features of each ensemble for the development of the young musician. When choral students are educated with cross-pollinated pedagogy derived from choral and instrumental paradigms, students exhibit growth in both their musical literacy and aural skill development. Continued practice for young musicians in a cross-pollinated environment results in students who can be confident in both reading and aural skills. Students empowered with literacy skills, which include reading and aural skills, are informed musicians, and it is evident in their musical performance and connection to the art form.

Book Description
"The Oxford Guide to Choral Artistry, a Kodály Perspective for Middle School to College Level Choirs, is a practical and organic approach to teaching choral singing and sight-reading. The text is grounded in current research from choral pedagogy, music theory, music perception, and cognition. Topics include framing a 1) choral curriculum based on the Kodály concept, 2) launching the academic year for beginning, intermediate, and advanced choirs, 3) building part-work skills, 4) sight-reading, 5) a progressive music theory sequences for middle to college level choirs, 6) teaching strategies, 7) choral rehearsal plans as well samples of how to teach specific repertoire from Medieval to Contemporary Choral Composers. As part of the Kodály philosophy's practical approach, we include two models for learning choral literature. The first is a "Performance Through Sound Analysis" model for understanding Commercial, Global Folks, and arrangement. The second is a "Performance Through Sound Analysis and Notation" model for learning classical music and recently composed music. Both models delineate an approach to teaching a choral work that significantly improves students' musicianship while at the same time, engages the ensemble in learning the overall composition in partnership with the conductor. The final chapter of the book includes rubrics to assess the effectiveness of a choral program. This book does not purport to be a comprehensive choral pedagogy text. It is a detailed guide to helping choral directors at all levels improve the choral singing and musicianship of their students from a Kodály perspective. We hope that this book serves as a resource for choral directors and inspire further conversations and dialogue concerning the application of the Kodály perspective to choral singing. The research for these publications is not presented as exhaustive nor conclusive; it is offered as a foundation. We encourage our colleagues in the field to continue to add to this research"--
