Book Description
Excerpt from Six Dramas of Calderón Choosing therefore such less famous plays as still seemed to me suited to English taste, and to that form of verse in which our dramatic passion prefers to run, I have, while faithfully trying to retain what was fine and efficient, sunk, reduced, altered, and replaced, much that seemed not; Simplified some perplexities, and curtailed or omitted scenes that seemed to mar the breadth of general effect, supply ing such omissions by some lines of after-narrative and in some measure have tried to compensate for the fulness of sonorous Spanish, which Saxon English at least must forgo, by a compression which has its own charm to Saxon ears. That this, if proper to be done at all, might be better done by others, I do not doubt. Nay, on looking back over these pages, I see where in some cases the Spanish individuality might better have been retained, and northern idiom spared; and doubtless there are many inaccuracies I am not yet aware of. But if these plays prove interesting to the English reader, I and he may be very sure that, whatever of Spain and Calderon be lost, there must be a good deal retained; and I think he should excuse the licence of my version till some other interests him as well at less expense of fidelity. Book Description
Excerpt from Calderon Be difficult of comprehension to nations more devoted to the material and the utilitarian; and that to them its results may appear fantastic. For, as the historian of Spanish literature goes on to say, the energy, the fancy, which, earlier, produced the beautiful ballads of Spain, the force of national character which drove the Moors from Toledo, Seville, and Granada, called forth, directed, and controlled, in the seventeenth century, a dramatic literature, which grew out of the national genius and the condition of the mass of the people. The Spanish drama, in its highest and most heroic forms, was still a popular entertainment. Its purpose was not only to please all classes, but to please all equally. Whether the story the mass of people saw enacted were probable or not, was to them a matter of small consequence. But it was necessary that it Should be interesting. Above all, it was necessary that it should be Spanish and therefore, though its subject might be Greek or Roman, oriental or mythological, the characters represented were always Castilian, and Castilian after the fashion of the seventeenth century, governed by Castilian notions of gallantry and the Castilian point of honour. Not there fore without an effort, can a reader of alien clime place himself at the right point of view from which to enjoy what so enraptured the people of Madrid two centu ries ago. A theatre that did not model itself on the antique, which was uninfluenced by Lope de Vega's con temporary, Shakespeare, and which was founded on the strongly-marked peculiarities of a national character very unlike our own, may fail to attract at first sight; however curiosity may be stimulated by the promise of a drama which, in many of its attributes and character. Book Description
Excerpt from Six Dramas of Calderón "I suppose Calderon was over-praised some twenty years ago: for the last twenty it has been the fashion to under-praise him, I am sure. His Drama may not be the finest in the world. One sees how often, too, he wrote in the fashion of his time and country: but he is a wonderful fellow: one of the Great Men of the world." Thus Edward FitzGerald in a letter to his friend, W. B. Donne, bearing the date, August l0, 1852. Many will agree with this estimate, and will regret that, after the lapse of fifty years, it is still, in many quarters, "the fashion to under-praise him." In Spain, as in other countries, the drama had its origin in religion, and we still possess the fragments of a medieval mystery play - that of the Reyes Magos. Alfonso's laws prove the existence of liturgical dramas performed at the great church festivals. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Dramas of Calderon, Tragic, Comic, and Legendary, Vol. 1 of 2: Translated From the Spanish, Principally in the Metre of the Original Conceiving, as I may be permitted to do, the delight with which a translator is driven impulsively, almost as by an original inspiration, to reproduce in his native tongue, those harmonies which have so enchanted him in another - making him hasten to show unto his countrymen the beautiful things which he has dis covered in his wanderings, like an admiring child bringing home a scenteduwild flower or a rosy shell from the meadow or the sea-beach where he has been playing - conceiving, I repeat, this enjoyment, I have little difficulty in realizing the distaste and aversion with which the same person will turn from the dreary wastes of arid and monotonous prose (the worse for being in a metrical form) which almost in all long poems surround those verdant oases, ou\ which trans lators first alight, and where they would be too happy to be permitted to remain.
