El estudio analiza en detalle la evolución de los principales indicadores económico-financieros de las empresas españolas de transporte por carretera durante el período 1998-2002, ambos años inclusive. Su objetivo es obtener una fotografía lo más nítida y fiable posible de la situación del sector nacional en el período analizado. El estudio supone una continuación del realizado para el período 1993-1998, con dos mejoras fundamentales, una cuantitativa pues la muestra de análisis asciende a 6.618 empresas frente a las 753 del estudio anterior, y otra cualitativa pues se ha completado el análisis del transporte de viajeros con el del transporte urbano y se han segmentado las empresas de transporte de mercancías. En primer lugar se analiza el conjunto del sector del transporte por carretera y a continuación se profundiza de manera independiente en los sectores de transporte de viajeros y de mercancías.

El objetivo del estudio es conocer la situación de las empresas de transporte por carretera en el período 1993-1998. Se ha estructurado en tres apartados : el primero contiene el análisis financiero, económico y de estructura de costes de las empresas durante el período de referencia. El segundo analiza el sector a escala global y la situación económica de una muestra de siete grupos de transporte por carretera en cuanto a los aspectos económico-financieros, principales fórmulas de financiación de las flotas y recursos destinados a la formación profesional. Finalmente se realiza un diagnóstico sobre la situación de las empresas utilizando datos macroeconómicos correspondientes al sector y a la economía en general: cuentas anuales depositadas en el Registro Mercantil, información incluida en un cuestionario contestado por las empresas, y datos obtenidos de las más representativas, en entrevistas mantenidas con directivos y responsables de las mismas.

Utilizando como fuente principal la documentación presentada anualmente en el registro mercantil, se selecciona una muestra representativa de empresas de transporte de viajeros, discrecional y regular y de mercancías, tanto de carga general, nacional e internacional, como de especialidades, así como de las agencias de transporte. De cada uno de dichos subsectores se analizan ratios de liquidez, solvencia, estructura financiera, costes, etc., llegándose a un diagnóstico de la situación económicas y financiera de cada uno de ellos.
