Book Description
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In these hilarious essays, the Saturday Night Live head writer and Weekend Update co-anchor learns how to take a beating. “I always wanted to punch his face before I read this book. Now I just want to kick him in the balls.”—Larry David NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Cosmopolitan • Vulture • Parade If there’s one trait that makes someone well suited to comedy, it’s being able to take a punch—metaphorically and, occasionally, physically. From growing up in a family of firefighters on Staten Island to commuting three hours a day to high school and “seeing the sights” (like watching a Russian woman throw a stroller off the back of a ferry), to attending Harvard while Facebook was created, Jost shares how he has navigated the world like a slightly smarter Forrest Gump. You’ll also discover things about Jost that will surprise and confuse you, like how Jimmy Buffett saved his life, how Czech teenagers attacked him with potato salad, how an insect laid eggs inside his legs, and how he competed in a twenty-five-man match at WrestleMania (and almost won). You'll go behind the scenes at SNL and Weekend Update (where he's written some of the most memorable sketches and jokes of the past fifteen years). And you’ll experience the life of a touring stand-up comedian—from performing in rural college cafeterias at noon to opening for Dave Chappelle at Radio City Music Hall. For every accomplishment (hosting the Emmys), there is a setback (hosting the Emmys). And for every absurd moment (watching paramedics give CPR to a raccoon), there is an honest, emotional one (recounting his mother’s experience on the scene of the Twin Towers’ collapse on 9/11). Told with a healthy dose of self-deprecation, A Very Punchable Face reveals the brilliant mind behind some of the dumbest sketches on television, and lays bare the heart and humor of a hardworking guy—with a face you can’t help but want to punch.

Book Description
Comedy is a powerful contemporary source of influence and information. In the still-evolving digital era, the opportunity to consume and share comedy has never been as available. And yet, despite its vast cultural imprint, comedy is a little-understood vehicle for serious public engagement in urgent social justice issues – even though humor offers frames of hope and optimism that can encourage participation in social problems. Moreover, in the midst of a merger of entertainment and news in the contemporary information ecology, and a decline in perceptions of trust in government and traditional media institutions, comedy may be a unique force for change in pressing social justice challenges. Comedians who say something serious about the world while they make us laugh are capable of mobilizing the masses, focusing a critical lens on injustices, and injecting hope and optimism into seemingly hopeless problems. By combining communication and social justice frameworks with contemporary comedy examples, authors Caty Borum Chattoo and Lauren Feldman show us how comedy can help to serve as a vehicle of change. Through rich case studies, audience research, and interviews with comedians and social justice leaders and strategists, A Comedian and an Activist Walk Into a Bar: The Serious Role of Comedy in Social Justice explains how comedy – both in the entertainment marketplace and as cultural strategy – can engage audiences with issues such as global poverty, climate change, immigration, and sexual assault, and how activists work with comedy to reach and empower publics in the networked, participatory digital media age.

In the great Zen tradition of teaching stories, Marc Lesser relates his own personal and professional trials as he navigates the delicate path of managing a successful business while staying true to his spiritual roots. Struggling through a difficult economic climate, he also faces the usual challenges of running a growing company -- meeting payroll, balancing cashflow, hiring and firing employees, and maintaining relationships with vendors and customers. Guiding him through these difficulties while providing strength and insight is the practice of Zen. Utilizing his training as a Zen practitioner, Lesser learns to apply specific teachings such as the eight-fold path directly to work and life. In chapters such as "Work: The Impossible Request," "Appreciating Uncertainty," and "Accomplishing More by Doing Less," ZBA: The Zen of Business Administration provides readers with intimate, helpful advice, while acknowledging the paradox of applying spiritual practice to the business world.

Book Description
DESCRIPTION The King Of All Liars is a work of humorous fiction by author Teni Abegunde. This book is billed as the first ‘sit-down’ comedy, in the opposite sense to 'stand-up.' The approach is simple: you read the book as though its author was a stand-up comic delivering the lines to you in your own home. From early life to the here and now, Teni makes it clear that he wants the lazy life, and this book is a lazy, luxurious way to enjoy comedy without having to go out to a show. REVIEW “Teni Abegunde’s comedic style is mostly observational, and the book certainly feels like he is directly addressing an unseen audience in the stand-up comedy fashion. Some of the stories in The King Of All Liars are pretty incredulous, and others point out the very amusing and irritating parts of everyday life that we can all relate to.” —Readers’ Favorite FROM THE AUTHOR The concept of a sit-down comedy book evolved gradually. The idea started in high school during a regular hangout with my friends. I noticed that two girls who were visiting us that day weren't laughing at the jokes I'd been telling. Puzzled, I asked one of my friends if the girls were pregnant. "No, they’re not pregnant—they’re deaf," she replied. At first, I thought she was joking, but one of my other classmates confirmed it. Later that day, the two girls sent a note to me asking if I could write down what I’d said that had made everyone laugh. Though I didn’t mention in the note I sent back to them that I’d asked if they were pregnant, I did include a couple of things I said that were funny. The one-page joke I sent to those girls that day was the beginning of my sit-down comedy book. Many more notes followed as they kept on asking for more. These girls would later give me a name: “the Funny Hand of God.” I adopted the name quickly. It was better than the nickname my friends at school called me. You don’t want to know. Stand-up comedy has been around for many decades, and in that time many great comedians have emerged, keeping the tradition alive. These include: George Carlin, Steve Harvey, Lenny Bruce, Dave Chapelle and many more. Yet, out of millions of people who know these comedians from watching and listening to them, many have only known them by name, and by the books some of them authored. The best material from these comedians is only known to those who can hear them. A year ago at Dulles Airport, I met one of those girls who visited our school that day. She reignited the memories we shared together. I can’t describe the feelings I felt when she gestured that I am the funniest person she has ever known. From that moment on I decided I want to be known as the funniest comedian that never performed on stage. I want to deliver stand-up comedy inside a book. Someone has to do it. This is how the first sit-down comedy book came to be. And many more will follow. If you are looking for a book that will make you laugh, check out The King Of All Liars. I promise, it won't disappoint you.
